Bottle Nipple Size?

I ebf and started back to work the other week. I currently have DD on a size 2 nipple for when the sitter gives her bottles. She wants her to go up to a size 3 because she says it takes DD a long time to finish a bottle. I've been resisting because I thought she just needed to get used to taking a bottle. I also don't want her to get used to a faster flow and then get frustrated when she was to work to get milk out when she's feeding. DD is 15 weeks old. Any other babies on a size 3 nipple who are breast fed? Thanks!

Re: Bottle Nipple Size?

  • What does your sitter class as too long? DD is three months (13 weeks) and we're still pace feeding with a size 1 nipple. DD started out exclusively bottle fed but switched to EBF at 1 month and gets bottles when I work weekends.

  • I'd be concerned about the same thing. DS takes a size 1 when he's given a bottle of my milk. Size 2 was WAY too fast for him. He'd sometimes choke! I was even considering a premie nipple because of how fast he drinks all bottles.
  • *Lurker* I formula feed but we recently switched LO from size 1 to size 2 nipples at 6 weeks old. He still takes about 20 minutes to finish the bottle no matter what size nipple is on it. The only difference we noticed is he doesn't get as gassy after drinking from a size 2 (we assume it's because he doesn't have to suck as hard and isn't getting as much air).

  • DD is ebf and at 15 weeks she's still on a size 0 Avent nipple. Hubby has been pushing for the size 1 but I don't see her having issues with this one. A 3-4 oz bottle takes her 15-20 mins and in the past increasing the flow has caused her major issues.

I've never seen time as an excuse to increase flow. Not only can it cause issues with bf if it's too fast but if they're gulping to keep up they can have more issues with gas.

I'd be interested how long the baby sitter thinks is too long and maybe talk to her about pace feeding.

We also just switched from avent 0/1 and I'm contemplating switching back because it seems too fast. She's 15weeks and now 4oz bottles take 10-15mins.
  • Dumb question...how do you know the size? We use the Medela bottles (5oz) and I just use the nipples that came with those bottles (they say for 0-3 months) and then the big 8oz bottles say for 3+ (I'm assuming those are a different flow nipple) DD is 10 weeks so I haven't switched

0-3 is slow flow and 3+ is medium (usually). As long as baby is eating comfortably and not becoming frustrated then there is no need to increase flow rate. Slow eating is typically easier on their bellies, anyway.
  • @kdoak2015 we bought size 1 but haven't tried them yet. I just feel like if we went up she'd struggle because she doesn't get the best seal with bottles due to upper lip tie.
  • Thanks guys! I'm not sure how long it's taking. I'll ask when I see her Monday (I work M-W). At home when she takes a bottle she fiddles with it a bit but then sucks it down quickly. I know I have a very fast let down and she's able to amazingly well but after that she does have to work for it. I don't want to mess with that. I think part of it is she's still not a big fan of bottles.
  • With my older son, he was on level 1 (Dr. Brown's) for the whole year and a half that he took a bottle. This was with both breastmilk and formula and then whole milk. I never even thought to switch it because he never had any issues.
  • i asked something similar to this on my breastfeeding page on FB and people were telling me we really never have to change the nipple size that it's more for money gain by companies than a baby's benefit. My LO is still on the size one for Mam bottles nonetheless and she still sucks it down really fast so I don't think she needs a faster nipple anytime soon. Your LO might just be taking her time which is normal for breastfed babies to do at our boob anyways.
  • Thanks again! I think I need to stick to my gut and have her stay at her current nipple size.
  • My LO us 12 weeks old, and uses either size 1 or size 3 dr browns nipples. Size 1 is when he's just getting a bottle with his medicine in it, and size 3 is when he gets the bottles with cereal (he spits up almost all of what he eats bc of his reflux so we had to give him cereal to try and keep more down). He wasn't getting anything with less than a size 3 nipple, and honestly he drinks from the size 1s pretty quickly so I'm certainly not bumping that size up too soon. I think the sitter either doesn't understand that it's supposed to take a little while, or she is being selfish. Hard to say which without knowing her.
  • DD was on size 1 Avent Natural and went up to size 2 only very near when she was about ready to stop using a bottle, so maybe from a bit under to a little over a year?

DS is 11 weeks old using a size 1.

Both kids were FF with bottles. DD was nursing, also, (more like supplementing with it) until she was six months old. DS is EFF since about 2 or 3 weeks old.
