Nursery in one bedroom apartment

I started shopping for baby furniture but I can't decide what to get and where to put everything. We've got some space in the bedroom and some space in the living room, but not enough space to put everything in one corner. I can't decide between a bassinet, crib and/or pack and play. Also, is a changing table necessary? Any suggestions?!?

Re: Nursery in one bedroom apartment

  • Hey there is also live in a 1 bedroom apartment. We plan to get a crib/changing table , the one that coverts. The pack and play if I get one will be in car to go places. Till next year hope to move by then

  • We also live in a 1 bedroom and I was looking at mini-cribs. Any one have experience with them?
  • We'll be bringing baby home to a one bedroom as well! Here's our plan:

Full size crib is going in our bedroom. It will be a tight fit, but since we are planning on moving within a year after LO is born, we figured it made sense to get the full size crib we wanted.

3 drawer dresser to put baby things in and changing pad on top of. Going to do a cool peg-board storage thing on the wall behind the changing station - Pinterest has great inspiration!

Pack n' Play in the living room

Rock n' Play to use wherever we need

Since both the PnP and RnP fold up, I'm not too worried about the space they will take up.

  • I actually live in a camper, have for 7 months now. We went from a 2 bedroom apt to this after we bought some land that we intend to build on.

we have a crib/combo changing table with drawers that works amazing. DD will continue to sleep there and baby will sleep in a rnp. We never really used a pnp. For us, the changing table is very worth it. I'm 6'0" and using the floor or bed or somewhere else just doesn't work as well for me. It's nice to have a designated area for everything as well. Some people don't use changing tables but in such a small space (we lived in an apartment before) ours has been invaluable. Especially for blowouts because there is less to worry about.
  • We live in a tight space also. My plan is to get a pack n play that has a rock n play/changing table with it. We will not be doing a crib until we find a bigger place to move into. Also will be getting another rock n play and we will be getting a larger dresser. The pack n play and dresser are going in our living room because we just don't have room in our room or anywhere else!  And not to mention we are prepping for twins! Let me find a pic of the pack and play we are asking for...

  •  I am not going to be a ton of help because we had a small apartment but I never used a crib or bassinet, but I will tell you that I had a changing table from a friend for a short time and it was not helpful to me. I prefer to change diapers on a blanket on the floor. A great example is this: I'm changing my daughter's diaper and somehow manage to get poo on my hands. If she's on the changing table, I can't really run to the bathroom and wash my hands! But if she's on the floor, no big deal. That's how I have always been plus you can get different angles and have more space to move around if not hindered by a changing table!
  • I would probably forego the changing table to save space.

  • A changing table is not necessary, I planned on changing DS on the floor but I ended up with a c-section and it was necessary to have a changing pad on an elevated surface.
  • I feel your pain! I live in a "JR(!)" one bedroom aka tiny lol and here is our plan.. Rock and play bassinet thingy in the bedroom next to my side of the bed.  Mini crib behind the couch and we are hanging a decorative divider curtain thingy from the ceiling to make it a seperate space. We have an ikea Kallax (4x2) up against the wall in that area and the changing pad will go on top and storage in the squares below. We got rid of our side chair in the living room and I'm getting a glider/footstool.  Any other items like tummy time mat, toys, etc will go in this storage bench we currently have.
  • We used LO'S dresser as changing table. I had baskets on top and on the wall for all diaper/hair/misc that we needed. She slept in a Bassinet next to our bed for the first 4 months because she was so little. Then into a crib.

@tmk0325We have that same PNP. DS slept awesome in that "newborn napper" thing when he was little. We never used the changing table thing, though. It didn't feel very sturdy to me.

I don't feel like a changing table is necessary. We have always used the top of DS's dresser (with a changing pad on it) and it's been great, even now at age two. We just keep the supplies in one of the dresser drawers.

  • I live in a 2 bedroom townhome but it's pretty small. The nursery will share with the guest room. We're forgoing the changing table because we simply don't have room and I don't really see a need for it. One thing we're doing that I think will be really helpful is installing wire shelves in the closet so we can hopefully fit everything baby in the closet to store. There are a lot of ideas you can find online on how to conserve space and fit a nursery into a one bedroom apartment. I found it really helpful in planning for our nursery.
  • Thanks everyone for responding!
  • We are going through the same. We have a small 900square foot 2 bedroom. Our 5 year old has 1 bedroom which only fits his bed dresser and small nightstand. No space for anything else.
Our room has a king, 2 dressers and a nightstand and we barely can walk through. We are looking at downsizing the bed, ditching a dresser for a long one and putting the crib with us.
We used a changing table last time though not sure where it will go this time. We've been trying to sell our house to get a three bedroom so hopefully this is a temp thing.

  • We do have 2 bedrooms but our home is small. We're doing a mini crib from Target and a dresser to serve as a changing table. Also really being conscious about the extra stuff (e.g. not much!). There are tons of examples and ideas on Pinterest that may help you too!
  • Changing table was an absolute must for us!

We are also looking at either a MiniCrib (my mom has one and its great, much nicer for babies 3months+ than a PNP).  Or a crib with an attached changer.

  • We're in a 1BR w/a sunroom but we're also in TX so with a summer baby coming the sunroom is OUT. My 1st thought was to go with a bassinet but what's the point after 3 mos (tops) so a PNP it is! The one pictured above is exactly the one we're going with. That will work perfect for now. Good luck girlie!
