Waking to feed

just curious how old was/is your baby when you didn't have to wake to feed them in the middle of the night. I'm still aways off from this stage as Lakely is still so young but just wondering. Thanks in advance. (:

Re: Waking to feed

  • When the pediatrician said so at her 2 week appointment. DD was way past her birth weight so she said we're good to let her call the shots with feeding times. She just said to not let her go more than 4 hours during the day so she didn't get her days and nights confused

  • Charlotte is only 2.5 weeks old and at our appt last week the dr. said that we can let her go 4-5 hours through the night if she will, but only if she goes no more that 3 or 4 hours during the day like @ashton2190 said. But for me, she wakes up on her own every 2.5-3 hours in the night anyway so I dont even have to wake her up. She does it all on her own. I can't wait until she sleeps longer.
  • By day 6 LO was passed her birth weight and my midwife said we no longer had to wake her at night. She encouraged us to not let her go longer. 2-3 hours during the day though so as to not confuse day and night and to get her nursing sessions during the day.

she will give us 5-6 hour stretches every few days, when we are lucky.

  • My pedi recommends waking every 4 hrs if they haven't on their own until they give the ok at the 2wk appt (if their weight is ok). I've never had to wake DD2 or DD1. DD1 nursed every 3-4hrs well past a year before going longer stretches

Thanks ladies- I appreciate it! We live 70 miles from the nearest peds so we just use our family care provider in our town- she is great but doesn't see a lot of babies so I figured the women here would know more! So far my little one wakes up ever 2.5 hours maybe 3 on her own (I set an alarm but she'll be stirring right then) @oxsarah7ox I know it, I can't wait until it's every 4 hours during the night that will seem like so much consecutive sleep for us moms!!
  • I have never had to wake my babies. They wake when they're hungry. Which has been every 2-3 hours. But my kids did not have weight concerns.

Mine enjoys a good cluster feed at night so never woken her. Last night she let me have two three hour stretches though which was amazing! Doubt it will happen again for a while!
  • DS2 is five weeks old. I don't wake him at night but he wakes up around every 3 hours around the clock wanting to eat. Occasionally he will sleep at night for 4-5 hours. With DS1 I remember him being able to go about 6 and sometimes 7 hours overnight by the time I went back to work at 12 weeks. Hoping DS2 can fall into the same pattern. Sleep deprevation is definitely wearing on me especially when I have a toddler home with me all day.

  • My dr also recommends that you stop waking after passing their birth weight:)

  • After about day 4, we stopped setting an alarm to wake up and feed Annie. She was waking us up on her own every 2-3 hours. At week 1, our doctor said we could give her one 4 hour stretch w/o feeding, especially if it was at night.

Shes now 5 weeks old and sleeps at least a 6-8 hour stretch. If it's 8 hours, I usually get up around 6am to pump because I'm so full. She also cluster feeds like no other some nights.
  • The general rule is once they pass their birth weight. After that, I never wake a baby to feed them. If they're tired they will sleep. If they're hungry they will wake. Paige takes long naps in the day sometimes and she still sleeps well at night. My other daughter was terrible at napping and terrible at sleeping. Every kid is so different. Personally, at this age, I think it's silly to try to schedule when they sleep, wake, and eat. It will only cause you more stress.

No offense but I hate you... :)
Ha! None taken! We have bad nights too! Hope things get better soon...
  • Ugh Penny still cluster feeds at two weeks and still wakes to eat at every 1-2 hours but she lost 10% of her birth weight before so is still catching up
  • We were originally waking Brynn during the night until she gained back her birth weight after the first 2 weeks. After that, she gradually started sleeping for longer periods at night. For the past week she has been sleeping for 6-8 hr stretches during the night and feeds every 2-3 hours during the day. The pediatrician was happy with her weight gain at the 1 month visit and wasn't concerned that she was sleeping for so long.
  • I currently put my LO to bed at around 11pm.  Since he's past birth weight, the plan is to let him sleep as long as he wants; however, like clockwork, he's been waking up the past few nights at 3:00am and 6:00am.  He usually falls back to sleep and I wake him up at 9am to get the day started if he hasn't gotten up before that.  I don't let him nap longer than 3 hour spurts during the day.
