My husband's work just changed insurance carriers last summer. So instead of my awesome family doctor who delivered my 2nd daughter, I need to find an OB (apparently family doctors and midwives aren't an option).
I got a recommendation for an OB, and she gets great reviews online, so I called to set up an appointment, and find out the first appointment is a class given by a nurse practitioner. After that I get to schedule an 8 week or so appt with the doctor. I've never heard of having to do a class first! Does anyone else have to do this?
Re: First appt is a group class?
5 other women, a midwife/RN explained their philosophy, what to expect about appointment timing, testing, frequency of visits, how they do delivery, genetic testing, etc. Then they did one on ones with all of us, scanning the paperwork I just filled out on my medical history, family history, etc. Then labwork, scheduled the 8 week ultrasound, easy peasy.
I had a nurse tell me the group intakes are much easier for them, much faster to get us processed into their system. I was told I wouldn't have been seen at a different practice for a full month further out. Eff that.

We did it with our first child. It was very helpful never having been through any of it before they gave us the nurse hotline, explained when we should call and we should just relax for a bit, talked us through the typical apt schedules, explained which hospital choices we had, how payments and billing worked, etc. When I called to schd my first (confirmation) apt this time they didn't mention it. I assumed since I'm a second time mom I'm exempt.
Maybe you are included in the class because you are a new patient to that office, even though you are not a new mom.
