Sleep Training a Toddler

Eh, not really. But seriously, someone help me get this kid out of my bed! We have started a horrible, horrible habit of letting her sleep in our bed because 1. We're all about getting sleep however we can get it. 2. Meltdowns about sleeping in her own bed are not worth potentially waking up the 4 month old that sleeps from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. every single night. No way is that being messed with...I need at least one decent sleeper! Also, she fights bedtime for at least 2 hours every night. Yes, we have a routine, and she has basically told me, "F you and your bedtime routine, Mom." (Figuratively speaking). Any suggestions from mamas who have been there, done that? Any mamas currently in the hell that is putting a toddler to bed and just want company in the misery?

Re: Sleep Training a Toddler

  • How old? My first week through a terrible period for about 6 months when she was 2. Suddenly she snapped out of it and is now an amazing sleeper at 4.

  • She's two and three months...I'm hoping she snaps out of it ha! Coincidentally I rolled over last night and actually had space...jumped up to go find her and turns out my husband was able to get her in her bed and she stayed there. I hope it continues.
  • We put a child gate on our toddlers bedroom door and there were a few ugly nights of crying.  It probably took less than two weeks for him to become a great sleeper.  After a short bedtime routine he tells us "bye" and we leave him
in his room and he falls asleep, same for naps.  We did put an air mattress in his room so we can cuddle with him as part of his bedtime routine.  He sleeps 12 hours.  I agree with you on having a four month old, it's exhausting to have two babies up at night!!  We tried less aggressive methods with him because we didn't want him to cry.  Nothing was working and I felt it was becoming more emotionally stressful on him by dragging out the process of trying to keep him in his room, so we got the gate.  Best thing we did. I am finally sleeping after 2 years
  • I've totally been through this with my now 4.5 year old son. He was a wonderful sleeper until he got the flu at 18 months and he was SO sick that for our peace of mind, and out of exhaustion, we brought him into our bed. Well that lasted until he was about 3. We bought a house and let him decorate his own room and pick out everything from wall color to themes and decorations. I thought this would solve the issue, but it didn't right away. Once he hit about 3.5 or so, he just started sleeping in his room all night. I feel like if you continue to play up how "cool" a big girl room is, and give her some input on her space, it might be a motivator. Good luck!! You are def not alone!
  • How long has this been the case? Is it the result of a sleep regression where she was previously sleeping in her own room? Have you considered by putting her mattress on the floor next to your bed as a start to get her used to the idea? At least then she would get comfortable on her own while in the same room with you and you and your partner would have more space in bed.

We redid her room in Frozen about a year ago when we transitioned from a "nursery" to her toddler bed and it was great for awhile! However, she's obsessed with donuts now so I actually just spent $125 on a pillow case and donut comforter (why are donuts so expensive?!) hoping that lures her back in her room. We've been talking to her all day about how awesome she did sleeping in her big girl bed so hopefully it'll stick! Thank you for the suggestions and I'm glad I'm not alone!
