Baby's engaged already

so I looked to see if there was a post about this already but couldn't find one..sorry if there is. I am 29+4 days and yesterday at my midwife appointment my midwife told me that my daughters head is already engaged! Is this super early?? Has anyone else been told their baby's head is already engaged?

  • What did your MW say?

    Been married since 2009.
Unicornuate Uterus (yes I menstruate glitter)
    Several MCs
DD born 2013 (our miracle "you can't have babies" baby!)

  • She said its most like that she will come earlier than my due date! But my sister freaked me out and said that's really early for your baby to be engaged!
  • @dcheard Unless your sister is a MW or OB I would just listen to your MW. Does your MW seem concerned? Did she give you a timeline of when LO may get here?

  • What's an engaged head?
  • I totally thought this meant engaged as in getting married.

    Sorry, I'm no help.
Me too, I was so excited to read a thread about an arranged marriage!

I agree it seems pretty early, OP, but at least you don't have to worry about baby being in the right position later on! I don't have an expertise to contradict your midwife, but since it's not baby's head that dilates you, but contractions, I don't see how this is a problem. Except for probably being uncomfortable...
I read the title and immediately thought arranged marriage, too! DH's best friend and his wife sent us a gift for our LO the other day "from" their 16-month-old daughter and signed it "Love, Your Future Daughter-In-Law." I totally thought that's where this post was going! OP, as a FTM I have no advice to add in terms of what you actually meant (sorry). But if you are concerned, talk to your midwife about it and she may be able to put your mind at ease. Like PPs said, she can probably give you an approximate time frame.
  • Lurking from April16.

FTM and baby dropped just shy of 32 wks. I have experienced tons of lightning crotch and more frequent BMs. I also started dilating and efface (but I hear that doesn't mean much). The only reason my doc was concerned was because I have other preterm labor symptoms that have been going on for a while.

When is the 'normal' time for a baby to drop and start getting into position? Is there a certain week this usually happens by?

My midwife said 35-36 weeks is when they start getting us to try things to get baby to rotate if they haven't already done so on their own. She said, at least in her experience they tend to stay put after that for the most part.
  • I will also echo PPs and say that if your MW isn't concerned, try not to worry yourself. While he never was engaged, my son was pretty low from about week 30 on and when he was delivered at 34wks had just dropped into first station. He was not exactly ready to be birthed vaginally and could have stayed there until term if my body wasn't going to hell in a handbasket! Basically, from my ridiculous experience and limited knowledge of maternal care, I would say a baby's head being engaged is not as clear of an indicator of preterm labor as contractions or dilation and effacement.

And PS- During my Lamaze class with my son, another mother and I got super close and decided our kids would get married. Fast forward two years and they are BFFs, absolutely LOVE each other, my son always says her daughter's name first in his bedtime "Thank Yous" to God, and her daughter calls my son "her boy". She will actually say "Is my boy coming over today?" So for all you looking for an arraigned marriage story, I think I may have one!
Could they be any more adorable??? I love it!
  • DS was engaged from about 28-29 weeks on. Just made it rather uncomfortable for me the last few months since his head was RIGHT there. He came at 39+1 and no, it didn't make my labor any shorter sadly. I was in early labor for 2 days before getting past 1cm. As long as your doctor is fine with it then I wouldn't worry
