AMA mommas?

Where my old ladies at? Who else is over 35? Is this your first? If not, how old were you with previous births? Will you do genetic testing at 10 weeks?

Re: AMA mommas?

  • I was 33 when I had DS and will be 35 for this birth. We will do genetic testing at 10 weeks, which I'm thankful insurance covers now that I'm 35. We've had two losses so we are looking forward to finding out whether baby is chromosomally normal soon, and bonus for finding out the sex early!

  • Here! I'm 36.
  • Old lady right here! I'm 38 and will be 39 when the baby is born. This is my first, and I'm getting the testing done on Feb 1 at 13 weeks. It's a little late, but I'll be on my honeymoon all through weeks 11 and 12. I'll be nervous when it gets here, but I am excited to find out the gender.
  • I'm 36 and this is my first. I'm nervous about the genetic testing but I will do whatever my Dr. reccomends.
  • I will be 36 at delivery and this is my 2nd. We had DD when I was 34 so I wasn't able to get the super in depth genetic testing, just the standard ones. We will be getting all the genetic testing done and also finding out the sex early is a nice perk with those tests too!
  • I'm 38, and if this kiddo comes on time I should still be 38 when s/he is born! This is our second, we had our first when I was 34. We'll definitely do the genetic testing; annoyingly the lab attached to our midwife's hospital doesn't take our insurance so I think we'll have to pay out of pocket.

  • I'm 39 and due three weeks before my 40th birthday! This is my first and we will definitely be doing the genetic testing. The increased risks with AMA have me a little freaked out, but so far everything has looked good. Plus, I was born four days after my mom's 40th birthday, so I'm thinking that's a positive sign. :)
  • I'm 35.  I was 33 when my first was born.

  • I was two months shy of 33 when I delivered my daughter and I'll be 34 (and a half) when I deliver this one. I'm going to ask my OB about the testing at 10 weeks to see what he thinks.  I know our insurance won't cover it since I'm falling six months short of qualifying as AMA, but if he thinks I would risk the same as a 35 year old woman (I don't see what difference six months could possibly make in my risk) we may go out of pocket.
  • Guess I'm the oldest so far! I'm 40, husband is turning 30 next week. It's our first, conceived through IVF. We will definitely be doing genetic testing.
  • FTM, 37 now, will be 38 when the baby comes. Not planning on doing any genetic testing. I think I'd rather just not know.
  • I found out i was pregnant on my 35th birthday :) I had DD when I was 31.
  • Im 34 and if this one makes it (2 previous losses) ill deliver 1 month before my 35th bday.

  • I'm 39 FTM, will still be 39 when little one comes. Will be doing whatever testing my midwife recommends
  • Will be 35 when this baby is born. Had the testing talk with my doc yesterday but we will not be doing any.
  • I will just turning 36 around the time my baby is due. This is my second baby. I gave birth to my first last March when I was 34. I Will be getting the NIPT if my doctor recommends it.
  • I'm 33, and we're expecting our first a few weeks before my 34th birthday.

We're planning to go for NIPT testing at 10 weeks. It's not covered, but I'm concerned about being a Robertsonian Translocation carrier (due to a high prevalence of Downs in my family). Based on my family history, my doctor has already recommended NIPT.

  • This is my 3rd and I will be 35 when they get here.  First at 29, second at 33 and then I thought I was done!  But SURPRISE!  I will be 35, almost 36, when the baby arrives.  I am most certainly doing all of the testing and actually have a date for three weeks to do the maternity21 where it tests for the chromosonal issues and confirms the sex.  Woot woot!!!!
  • Me! I will be 26 in 2 weeks, woohoo. This is baby #3. Had #1 at 29 and #2 at 31 =) I will be getting testing, but no amnio.

I'm 37 & will be 38 when this one arrives. Had my daughter 14 years ago just before turning 24. I am leaning toward no genetic testing.
  • I'm 37 and will be 38 when lo is born. This will be our second child but third pregnancy.
I'm doing the harmony test next week. not sure what I will do but all knowledge is worth having.

  • I am 34 and will be 35 when baby is due. I will not be having any testing. I had my first child at 23, my second at 27, and my third at 33.
  • I am 34 and will be 35 when baby is due.  I am on the fence with testing.  Does anyone know the specifics of what they check?  (We will learn more about it at my appointment Friday, but am supposed to decide that day if I am going to have it or not...I want to be able to think about it a bit, I guess...).
  • @jen mayhill this website has some great information about the various tests: https://www.whattoexpect.com/pregnancy/screenings-and-tests-during-pregnancy.aspx

The genetic tests include: Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT), Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS), Nuchal Translucency (NT) Screening, Quad Screening, and Amniocentesis. Sometimes, people will refer to these by the laboratory name that performs the testing (kind of like the test's "brand name" -- for instance Harmony does NIPT). When I called my insurance company to see whether tests were covered, they only had the information based on laboratory name.

Factors to consider: risk to fetus, when the test can be performed, likelihood of catching the problem on testing, likelihood of false positives, and cost/whether it will be covered by insurance.

  • Just turned 36, husband just turned 39. I was 33 when I had my son. He will be turning 3 when I deliver. I'm going to ask the OB if she can order the MaterniT21 test for chromosome screening.

  • I will be 36 at delivery and will be doing my testing at the end of next week. But just the blood test. I don't think I could ever do the invasive ones...
    Married - 4/7/07
    Son #1- 2/15/08
    Son #2- 8/18/10
    Baby 3 due 8/8/16
  • It feels nice to know we are all in good company.  I was 35 with my first and will be 38 when this one comes.  They didn't offer the testing back when I had my daughter but I will definitely do it this time.
  • I'll be 35 during this pregnancy, just had my genetic bloodwork pulled about 2 hours ago. Gonna be a long 7-10 day wait...family history of several birth defects combined with my age (i don't feel old yet..lol) combined with history of mc =insurance pays 100%. Fingers crossed no issues for this bean ! Having the indepth 12 week scan that goes in conjunction with this bloodwork on the 25th (I'm 11 wks today)
Bonus points for early gender I suppose. ... If anything reveals an abnormality we will elect not to do any further invasive testing and deal with it when baby arrives and go to genetic counseling in the mean time .
  • Hey everyone! I'm 36 and this is my first pregnancy. My doctor briefly mentioned the testing at my first visit, and I am leaning towards it. I am doing this on my own, and I think knowing may help with preparation. (I think!) It's great to hear about your stories, thanks a bunch!
  • I'm a little late to the party! I'm 35, and this is my third and final baby, due just days before I turn 36! I was 24 when I had my first, and 29 when I had my second, and had a MMC in between those 2.
I did NOT have the testing done at 10 weeks, for a few reasons, the first one being that I was in such denial about being pregnant, that I did not even take a test until January 17th. I was 10 weeks then. The other reason is that my DH and I have just always declined all genetic testing.
I did however have my dating scan at 12 weeks, and because I'm AMA, I had another ultrasound at 15W3D they told us at that one that everything looked good, and that it's a boy, but that they will look more in depth at  his heart when we have our 20 week scan, because they just didn't get good views of it that day.
