Diclegis: My one true lifesaver

I searched in our group to see if anyone had brought this up, but I hadn't seen it so I wanted to make sure that you all know that Diclegis is an option and it has been a lifesaver. I have been vomiting every day and nauseated all day, every day for the past two weeks. I've pulled muscles in my chest and am not ashamed to admit that I have peed my pants more than once from the sheer force of vomiting. (TMI?)

Anyways, last night at my midwife appointment I broke down into tears when she asked me how I was doing. I told her everything I had tried and she explained to me a drug called Diclegis which is a combo of B6 and Unisom. It makes you drowsy so you take it at night, but it might work. AND IT HAS. You guys, I had an entire chicken sandwich for lunch today and I'm not wishing I could die right now at work. She told me that a lot of women wait too long to ask their doctor/midwife about morning sickness because they assume that it's just that bad, and it's not. Some women don't have it at all, and some wait so long that it becomes life threatening. So, from one future momma to many more-- take care of yourself and know that there ARE options out there-- but you need to call your dr/midwife to find out what's right for you.

Hang in there.

Re: Diclegis: My one true lifesaver

  • This exactly! I wish I had known about it my last pregnancy, because it has been saving my life. My ms is finally starting to subside, and now pretty much only hits in the evening/night. It really does curb the nausea well. Weeks 9 and 10 were the worst for me and I felt like it wasn't doing much, but I probably would have been worse off without it. Glad you found relief!

Yaaaas, mama. I lost 6 lbs in 3 weeks from morning sickness. I was miserable. I finally got my hands on Diclegis samples (insurance wouldn't cover it) and the difference happened literally overnight. I haven't puked but once in almost 4 weeks, where before it was 5-7x a DAY.

  • Diclectin (Canadian brand name for it), is the only thing that saved me for the first couple of weeks, especially on my night shifts. I normally get nauseous around 3 am on night shifts, but combined with the pregnancy nausea it was unbearable. Thankfully it seems to be abating now, haven't had to take any for a few days, but I was super glad I had it. It's not always a saving grace though. A good friend of mine had nausea right up until she gave birth to her twins, and was on the full dose and she still ended up having to get fluid replacement multiple times because she was so sick. Glad it works for you though!

I've been on it since roughly the 6/7 week mark. It truly was a lifesaver for the first few weeks, but now I feel like my body has gotten used to it. I'm still constantly nauseous and usually vomit at least once every other day. And yes, peeing while puking happens on the reg. Fun times.

    Eta to correct stupid autocorrect.
  • @eagregg urrrggghh I'm sorry. I've noticed as the weeks have gone by mine doesn't squash the nausea completely, but I am still not puking like I was. I only take 2 at night; the other doses during the day make me too sleepy and I work full-time so random naps are not an option, ha.

  • I was so desperate last night that I just took two Unisom and prayed that they would help. I was actually able to eat some breakfast this morning, so I think that's a win. I don't think I've been able to stomach much more than a few crackers at a time for almost a week. Over it...

  • I've been taking Diclegis since I think week 7. I'm now 14 weeks and 6 days and still need it ( just threw up a few days ago again.). I ran out of samples before my next appointment and after hearing it was essentially unisom and b6, I figured I would just go get unisom and b6. It did not work. I made sure to get the Unisom that had doxylamine succinate too. I thought nausea was supposed to go away at the 2nd trimester, so when I had my next appointment  I did not ask for a refill because I thought I could make it a few more days. That was a huge mistake. I ended up calling in sick to work the next day and then calling my doctor for a refill and this time I begged them to give me a prescription instead of more samples. I had it filled at CVS and they said before the insurance it was $680 for a one month supply. Totally insane! I brought in my insurance and a coupon I found online and got it down to $40.00. I still throw up even with Diclegis, but it certainly helps. I've recently increased my dosage from just the 2 at night to 2 at night and one in the early evening. I have mid day to night sickness the most. Without the Diclegis it's 10x worse though. I can't even get out of bed. I'm glad I've had the medicine so I've been able to work.

  • @jackiel1987 $680!!!!!! That's insane!!! I'm not one for "big pharma" conspiracies, but that's a whole lotta money for a pill that's essentially a vitamin and an antihistamine. Glad you were able to get the price down!

Yeah, my insurance wouldn't cover it at all and the coupon only took about $300 off for me. I ended up getting a crap ton of samples from my coworker, whose mom works in an OB/GYN office. It's ridiculous what pharmaceutical companies can get away with charging.

The cost is ridiculous! I'm seriously contemplating not refilling it when I run out, which is soon. I'm up to all four doses a day and forgot to take my afternoon dose today (work was crazy). Honestly, I didn't feel any worse than I normally do.

Eta that before prescribing it, my midwife suggested a combo of Benadryl and B6 four times a day. So, similar to the rx. I made it maybe a day; I felt so horrible from trying it. Definitely not the same.
  • My insurance doesn't cover Diclegis but it does cover B6 which I received 25mg tabs. This you can take 4 times a day, and at night add the doxylamine which you can get generic at Walmart in the sleep aid area. The B6 alone helped me, so I never tried the combo. I read that you can take higher doses of the B6, just check in w the OB.

Maybe be this can help if you can't get samples or get the combo pill covered
