Trying to Get Pregnant

::vent:: Why doesn't my....

SIL postpone my niece's b'day party until tomorrow?  We are in the middle of a major snowstorm.  Besides she is only 2, she won't really know it's been postponed anyway and her real b'day isn't til tomorrow so it's not a huge deal.  I think it is rude to expect people to travel in this weather.  I hope the considerate/common sense genes are stronger on my side of the family!

  • GL with that. Just tell them that you can't make it b/c of the weather. But that may not go over so well if they are "hard headed" GL!

Oh no we can't do that bc DH is the "godfather" and he takes his role seriously.  He would NEVER cancel on his niece and dear sister!Angry

My son barely had a concept of his birthday at 2.  Now when he turned 3, he was very excited.  I am sure your SIL could make a cake today for her and give her their gifts and she would have no clue her party was postponed.

In my family we all spoke in sentences by 1.  I blame my SIL bc she barely talks to the kid! You need to hear language to learn language.

  • July--don't worry I've seen two year olds who only say a few words..everyone does it in their own time!
  • My son did talk very well at 2, but the concept of a birthday was not.  At that age he liked singing Happy Birthday and blowing out the candles.
  • While its entirely possible that the kid doesn't get what a "birthday" is, it's also possible that her parents have been talking to her about her family and friends coming over today for some time, and most likely mentioned it two days ago, yesterday, and today. I work with 1-2 year olds, and yes, there are some who only say a few words. But, there is one boy in particular who talks a mile a minute. He just turned two a week ago, and you can bet your bottom dollar he would have been pissed if his party had been moved at the last minute.

Did you mention this to her and offer to help call people to tell them it's postponed?

I wish I could, Dodge, but we don't have that kind of relationship.  She is very awkward with other women.  She is cold and unfriendly and only has one friend.  She only hangs out with family.

  • Even if the kid doesn't talk a lot, they still comprehend.

If their parents have been telling the "Grandma, Auntie, Uncle, etc etc" are all coming over tomorrow and we will have CAKE because you are so special...."

They will be sad when it doesn't happen.

It's the truth.  Even my cousin's little girl who is 3 now was speaking early.  My mom and aunt were very big into talking to all 4 of us like we were adults from infancy. We were VERY immersed in language from the beggining.

Why the quotes around godfather?? Is he the godfather? Or is he like the head of an italian mob? Because that is when it would be appropriate to use quotes.

If he is, that is, in my opinion, a big responsibility. If I were you, I'd be proud that he is taking that role so seriously. That bodes well of him as a parent and I don't think it deserves a Angry

My mom said I started talking at 9 months.  By a year I was speaking (simple) sentences as well.  My brother on the other hand...he had his own language until he was like 4.

  • Yeah.....one year olds are pretty much just gaining the muscle control needed to hold saliva IN their mouths as opposed to it running in rivers down their shirt. Speaking in full sentences? Like I said. I don't believe that. But, great story!

I guess that's your opinion.  I also got my first tooth at 2.5 months.  That doesn't usually happen either.  The little boy I babysit for also started saying words at 10 months.  So it's not impossible.

Yeah, I've seen 10 month olds say a few words too. Who hasn't? Full sentences before 1? Not so much. Not opinion, experience. You may have had different experiences.

Apparently we have.  I just think it's kind of rude to tell people they are lying.  Why would we lie about something like that.  We will just agree to disagree.

  • Haha, I guess I am rude then. I think it's perfectly ok that I don't believe that. Here's why. You know what else is common? Moms bragging about their kids and embellishing their milestones. I've heard plenty of moms saying "Oh, well my Billy was potty trained at 8 months!" "Oh YEAH? Well Sarah was reading the National Geographic by 2!" I have yet to SEE a 1 year old speaking in full sentences. I have worked with kids for, let's see...13 years? So, as some people say, I'll believe it when I see it.I must be rude. Lol.
