Retail Mommies?

Any of you work in retail? I'm an asst. manager at a retail store and my 10 hour days seem to be getting tougher to get through. I take as many breaks as I can but some days breaks seem nearly impossible. I'm exhausted all the time and this all afternoon into evening MS I have is for the birds. What do you do to get through your work day?

Re: Retail Mommies?

  • I don't work retail, but I do work in a hospital with 12 hour shifts. I'm a nursing assistant. It's rough, I won't lie. Eat lots of snacks, get a good night's sleep, and have a cup of coffee or tea in the afternoon if you're doing that. I usually just go home and go straight to bed.

  • Not in retail either but I work in recreation. I have a 9 hour shift plus an hour drive to and from. I get you on the exhaustion. I agree with @von1976, eat snacks and drink plenty of water. And don't feel guilty if you get home and just want to sleep.

  • I work retail, and am an asst. mgr too. I totally get where you're coming from, it's exhausting. Especially the shift work, where one day you go in at 6am the next at 2pm, it just makes it worse. Ive been drinking a lot of decaf tea, because staying hydrated makes me feel like i have more energy, but drinking water makes me have to pee like crazy. The hardest part for me is getting motivated to actually work and not just react to the situations around me. Also my mood swings are scaring people I think. I'm usually very easy to get along with, but I've been really snapping at people lately.
  • Another in retail- the days can be so long. My best advice, aside from the above, is good shoes! I also stash easy snacks, pretzels, apple slices, etc, just off the sales floor. Munching throughout my shift has been a lifesaver.

  • Retail pharmacist. 13 hour days. They're killer. I nap when the baby does on my days off. And frequent meals during work. Can't wait to be out of first tri!
  • It's rough. I told my boss early because of how sick I was. She's been great, making sure I take breaks to eat something and drink some water. My commute is the hardest part, though. If I drive, it's 45 minutes each way. If I take public transit, it's about 1.5 hours, each way. Public transit makes me puke, oh, about 90% of the time.

Just make sure you are taking care of youself, and don't be afraid to tell someone your needs.
