Preeclampsia Concerns

Hi all - I go in on Thursday for my anatomy appointment and 20 week checkup. I've been having some symptoms that are listed as ones often associated with preeclampsia, but they're also symptoms that can come with a regular pregnancy. I had vision blurring for only a few minutes each on two occasions over the last 2-3 weeks (while wearing my contacts or glasses), along with pretty much daily abdominal pains/cramping (but from what I read this is or can be normal) and some headaches. I'm going to discuss with my doctor on Thursday but does anyone have any experience from a previous pregnancy? I'm a FTM.

Re: Preeclampsia Concerns

  • Hey yes talk to your doctor and he can helo figure out if everything is okay. My 1st child was suppose to be born on November 23 2013 but she came a month early due to preclampsia. I started get anxiety feeling from my heart like an attack every 2 minutes. I talked to my doctor and he kept checking my urine for protein and my blood pressure. Then my blood pressure wasn't going down so they had me do a 24 hr pee bucket that u had to hand over so they can measure the protein in my urine. This all happen in 3 week time span.

  • Your symptoms are fairly nonspecific, and 20 weeks is usually early for pre-eclampsia, but the best thing to do is to measure your blood pressure which is a simple thing to do. That will give you an indication of whether or not to worry. And when in doubt, always always call doctor!

    THIS.  100%

Your blood pressure is one of the major indicators, same with proteins in your urine.  Other things to watch for: headaches that seem out of the ordinary (pregnancy along can cause them, but do they go away with water/ caffeine/ Tylenol or are they lasting?), fireworks in your vision, and abnormal swelling.

Talk to your doctor about it, but at this point, I wouldn't freak out about it.

FWIW - I had pre-e with my first and they just monitored me more closely, put me on blood pressure meds, ran labs more often, and I got to 34 weeks before bed rest.  Then I just had extra monitoring (3x a week) until 38.5 weeks when they decided it would be best / safest for me and baby to induce.

  • They induced me with my first because they suspected that I had pre-eclampsia. I was in the middle of getting a ton of tests done when I went into labor and my body refused to dilate.

Take a deep breath and try to relax. Major swelling, high blood pressure, and protein in the urine are all signs that your doctor looks for at each appointment.

  • I had preeclampsia with my son and my only symptom was high blood pressure.

I agree with PPs, your doctor is checking for preeclampsia everytime you go in. In the meantime, I would lay off Doctor Google, he'll drive you nutz.

  • I had pre-eclampsia with my first but no blurred vision. Just high blood pressure, headaches, and swelling in my feet. Just monitor your blood pressure for now. Ask a doctor and they will give you more info. If it is, trust that they will monitor it seeing as you're bringing up the concern rather early. I had my son the same day I went for my 28 week glucose test because I didn't bother telling the doctor of the symptoms I had been having for about a week before. Ask away. Better to be safe than sorry.
  • Sorry ladies....I have to wake up this thread.

For those diagnosed with pre-eclampsia in previous pregnancies, how quickly after receiving the results did they decide to induce you? How many weeks were you?

(I know some of you have already answered  this but I want to hear from other moms too)

Basically, I am waiting to see what my results are going to be. I have to drop the urine off (again) this morning and my OB appt is tomorrow. I'm sure I won't be able to know that quickly but I am freaking out. I'm 35+3 today.
  • @linzoirv I started showing signs at 38 weeks. They monitored me for about a week before my contractions were 2 minutes apart and decided that they couldn't wait anymore. I was a mild case, so I don't think I'm a great example. It really depends on how severe your pre-e is. If it's easily managed, they may try and let you have a spontaneous labor. If it's not, then it really depends on your BP and how LO is doing on the inside.

  • I was diagnosed with mild pre-e at 32 weeks and delivered via c-section (transverse baby) at 38 weeks after 6 weeks of bed rest.

    3 miscarriages - 1 DS (6) - 1 DD (3)  - #3 due March 30!

  • With DD I had high BP and extreme swelling from about 24 weeks until I delivered at 37+2.  I never had protein in my urine though so it wasnt diagnosed as pre-e. They induced because my BP kept getting higher and the risk for seizures increased.

With this LO I had protein in my urine starting Friday at my 34 week appointment and my BP was a little high. I had to turn in a 24 hour urine test on Mondayand then nhad another appointment. My BP was still good and I had protein in my urine at the doctors office but we had to wait for the 24 hour labs still. They got them yesterday and I haven't heard anything so I'm assuming no news is good news. My doctor said it's all a balancing act. They are going to monitor me and LO more and if anything changes or tips the balance we may induce or we may just monitor twice a week until delivery. She said it just depends on how both mom and baby are doing. Good luck and try not to stress to much!!

  • @TKaiser91 Have they placed you on any BP meds? Were you on BP meds during your previous pregnancy? I just spoke with the nurse after checking my BP at work. It was on the high side. Now, I have to go to the OB's office within the hour. She's going to check out my cuff and my BP log. She told me there's a high likelihood that I'll be put on BP meds today.

  • @linzoirv I was in L&D triage yesterday for severe headaches and high blood pressure, and they told me that if I have another episode they would consider inducing (I'm 37 weeks today). The resident said it depends on how high the BP is and how baby is doing, but they induce at 37 weeks for preeclampsia. Not sure if this is ACOG recommendations or my OBs preference.

  • @tara4910 Yes, I've heard the same things. Most OBs are going with 37 weeks. A co-worker told me she was induced at that time when she had preeclampsia. Best of luck to you. I pray you have a safe delivery and a healthy LO!
  • My update:

So, yesterday the OB's  office called me telling me that my 24 hour urine came back extremely high and pretty close to the preeclampsia threshold. For those reasons, I'm required to be in the office 2-3 times a week for NST and check ups. They also prescribed me meds for my BP and told me to continue a log 3x a day. I also have to do a 24 hour urine once a week to monitor the protein levels.

Basically, if something comes back wrong/elevated, I will be induced. Period. They don't want to take a chance of me developing full blown preeclampsia.

I'll 36 weeks tomorrow. I am just praying to God that I make it atleast to 37 weeks before delivery.

Fingers crossed that things settle down so LO can take their time coming out!

  • @linzoirv I didn't get BP meds until after delivery with DD. My BP this time is still ok so no mess so far but they are doing weekly 24 hour urine tests to watch my levels in case something changes. I hope it works out for you and that you can keep baby cooking a little longer!
