My birthday, what to plan, and how to sneakily not drink?

Hi all!

My bday is 3/31 and I'm a big bday gal. Always have a party with friends. Well this year I won't be able to drink but I can't tell all my friends why yet.

Seems like no big deal, but what do I plan where it won't be obvious? I live in Milwaukee WI so weather doesn't allow for outside activities. Also, living in "Brew City" means it seems like everything is drinking related. Looking for an activity where I can sip a "Mock-tail" or N/A beer unnoticed cuz we are all having fun doing something else.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I am a big G&T fan, so I switched over to club soda with lime. Looks like the real deal. DH has also played the trade off game with me-I'll get a beer, hold it and mingle, DH will come up and take the full beer, and give me his half finished beer so it looks like I actually drank a bit.

As to non-alcoholic beer- NIH  (link to article) has said that these beers may have a higher level of ethanol than the labels state, and advises pregnant women abstain to eliminate any risk of FAS.

  • My bday is 6/25 so I have a while. This isn't necessarily something I have to worry about though (not drinking that is). I'll be turning 20 this year so I wouldn't be drinking even if I wasn't pregnant. Young, I know. My DH (he's 22) and I got married June 2015; despite being so young we are very stable, with a home.
  • What about bowling?

Also, check out a thread from a few weeks back called "How are you hiding your pregnancy from your friends?"  I would post a link, but can't figure out to on mobile.  Lots of useful ideas for hiding not drinking there.
  • I got away with "drinking " vodka tonics all night recently.
  • Go to Dave and Busters! Tons of things to do, nobody will notice.

I just went to an engagement party at a brewery.  Normally I would order fake drinks, but everyone knows that I'm a beer lover so I didn't want any one to get suspicious.  Then my H and I did the switch off that @jdmrs said.

My cousin's bachelorette is in a couple weeks so I'm going to either order a bottle of beer, dump it in the bathroom and fill it with water, or order fake drinks.

I think no matter what you're doing, you can fake it.  People don't pay as close attention as you'd think.  I think we're more paranoid than anything!

  • I love drinking cranberry spritzers with lime and they look like vodka cranberries. Bartenders are happy to play along. Non-alcoholic beer (I know it has a teeny bit of alcohol, but I'll still be having one on occasion when it gets hot this summer) is also an option if it's on tap.

@abuck83 I feel your pain. You could do the virgin drink trick, or you could say you're on a cleanse or something, but since it's your birthday people would probably egg you on to break it for one night, so that's no good. We have a boozy work outing coming up and although it's before my first appointment, I'm just going to tell people at work what's up that week because I have no idea how to bluff my way through that day.

I get a chuckle out of the bowling suggestions. Bowling in Milwaukee is just drinking pitchers of beer while rolling giant balls down a lane. Your lane, if you're lucky. Basically, everything is just drinking + given activity here. We are not kidding.

You could maybe do a foodie tour, but that could still involve booze. I can't think of anything around here this time of year that is fun for a group of people, indoors, and not booze related in any way. There are plenty of nice things to do - hit a museum, go see a movie - but those are not necessarily great birthday outing options. I think your best bet is to let the bartender know what's up and roll with it.

  • Bowling is a drinking thing here too, but also pretty easy to just have a cup poured and let DH drink it for you.

  • I met DH while drunk bowling. Just thought I'd add that  ;)
  • @rebeccuh I might look into foodie tours, didn't even think of that! Are you in the Milwaukee area?

Thanks everyone for the thoughts. I'm a big beer person so I don't think I could get away with a cranberry  juice mocktail, but DH is on board with swapping drinks to make it look like I'm drinking.

Also might use the Dave and Busters idea too so thanks @OrangeEv !

  • @runningmama14 That's a good point.

@abuck83 Yep, in the area. There's a company that does different themed food tours around town but I don't recall the name off the top of my head. I know I've seen their little tour bus around though.

  • I'm going to a happy hour tonight so trying to figure out the same thing.  It's celebrating a friend's engagement so I didn't want to not go.  But we'll be at a table, so I'm not sure if there will be a subtle way to order a fake drink (probably soda water with lemon).  My best friend will be there and she's the only one who knows.  She was pregnant this time last year so I asked her for some tips.  She's doing this workout/diet challenge thing, so I think I'm just going to say that I'm doing that too.  Maybe that would work for you? The only problem with that is that I can't just order whatever I want to eat  :'(  So I'm hoping the fake drink thing works out somehow...

    It's a boy!

  • Maybe just plan a quieter celebration this year? I've been known to throw some big bday bashes myself, but other years I'm like, nah. No one notices.

I got married about a week after we found out and had to hide it from 180 people! My MOH and obviously my husband were in the know and got me mocktails all night--club soda with lime. I spent the night on the dance floor to avoid the bar too, so "I just need some water after all that dancing!" was also a good cover. So, maybe go dancing for your bday?
