Rolling over

so my baby rolled over for the first time from belly to back when she was 5 weeks old. Now she only does it every once in a while, she usually can't seem to get in the right position. And she still won't roll from back to belly. She turned 4 months old yesterday. Has anyone else had this too? Or have a baby that is not interested in rolling over?

Re: Rolling over

  • My son rolls belly to back when he feels like it and has been since 4 weeks. He hasn't quite gotten back to his belly yet but he tries. He gets completely on his side and the stops pushing with his feet and goes back to his back. He turned 4 months on the 24

  • From what I remember with my first, I think babies learn something then stop doing it sometimes because they are working on learning a new skill.  I wouldn't worry! My second has rolled from belly to back a few times then stopped recently.  She's getting close to the other way and is a litle over 4 months.  My first could roll back to belly really early on and ended up sleeping on his belly because he could roll that way.  Every baby is different!

  • My baby rolls back to belly and has for a couple months now but rarely of ever rolls from belly to back. When he rolls to his belly he seems to get stuck and gets really fussy. And he always rolls to the right!
  • My baby is 4 months and has never rolled. She went straight to sitting up. I'm not worried about it.
  • Mine has only rolled each way once.  My pedi said that its fine
  • My LO is almost 5 months and hasnt rolled over yet. She starts to then seems to get bored with it. Im okay with it thiugh because we atill swaddle and im terrified for when we have to stop!
  • My little one is 4.5 months and seems to want to crawl instead of roll. She pushes herself up and kicks her legs all crazy. She can roll belly to back but she doesn't always want to. She hasn't rolled back to belly yet, but she is close. I'm not worried. She'll do it when she wants.
  • My son is the same way. He started rolling back to belly as soon as he came out. Then stopped. Then was rolling belly to back consistently by 2 months. He will be 5 months on Sunday and will not roll either way. I asked his dr about it and he said not to worry. He checked how he does tummy time and how he sits and his muscles are still building like they should be so he said just keep trying but don't stress. They will do it when they are ready
  • My guy did the same thing, would roll occasionally - maybe a couple times a week. We just hit 5 months and he's a rolling maniac right now. He started by rolling onto his side to sleep, now he's all over his crib. It's annoying bc he gets caught up in the bars and cries.
Anyway, I wouldn't worry unless your LO isn't meeting other milestones
  • My baby is 18 weeks old and doesn't roll over. His pediatrician isn't concerned. She says that many babies actually skip this milestone altogether these days because they are on their backs so much.
  • Mine is 18 weeks and just rolled from belly to back. The look on her face was awesome.
  • Oh awesome!!! Thank you so much everyone! I feel a lot better now! Good to know its not just mine and she is normal! :) I was starting to think we didn't do enough tummy time in the beginning or something!
  • Lurker here! LO will turn 4 months this week, one day he will turn from belly to back 20 times in a row just to amuse me. Then he won't do it again for days, no matter how much I beg. We're still working on back to belly.
  • Baby has never really liked tummy time...except once when it was like the funniest thing to her and she kept giggling. I'm going to try it again so that she can start rolling over!
  • Same thing happened here. He did the exact same thing
  • Same! Conrad rolled over when he was 5.5 weeks old and did it several more times over the next several weeks. Then no more! But this morning he rolled over twice and again once this afternoon! (19 weeks) so it could be right around the corner for you!
  • My LO has rolled from belly to back and back to belly quite a few times but he doesn't do it very often. I've read that babies can only work on one skill at a time and currently he's trying very hard to sit up!  My best friends baby is 8 months and still hasn't rolled over and she doesn't seem very concerned about it!

Exactly. Same here. My baby never rolled belly to back. He completely hated tummy time and still does. but at 4 months he was rolling from back to belly and pushing up in that position, sitting a little and now at 5 months he sits fine unassisted and leans over to play with toys without falling. Every baby is different.
  • My baby girl just did her first complete roll -- that I know of -- today. I'm working from home and she keeps rolling. She's glad she learned something new and I guess she wants to keep practicing. I'm glad she can, though. It's a relief now so that if she rolls in the middle of the night she knows how to get back to her back.
