Talk to me about double strollers

I've coveted the City Mini double stroller for a long time, but I'm worried it won't stand up to the trail walks we do with our dogs. Currently we have a (single) Chicco Activ3 and love it because it has shock absorbers that make it a great off-road stroller.

Does anyone have a great double stroller they'd recommend? Preferably a jogging stroller but more importantly, it needs to be rugged!

Re: Talk to me about double strollers

  • @kmalls - So glad you posted this!  I was just looking for one this morning!  Yes, please, if anyone has any recommendations.  We just have a single one now, but will be needing a double... Thanks!

  • I have the same question.  We have a single BoB and it's fantastic, but the double is side-by-side and I think I'd prefer a tandem stroller since my kids will be 2 1/2 years apart.  I'm leaning toward the Phil&Ted Navigator with doubles kit, but I haven't spoken to anyone who actually owns one.
  • Thank you for posting this! @kmalls I thiiiink we are in the same boat--do you have a February 2015 baby? I baby wear a lot and can't decide if I need a double stroller or not. I'm thinking yes? All I know is that I DON'T want a side by side. So wide! Would make me crazy. The double stroller and wifi monitor are my two biggest gear questions/issues right now. I did a lot of research the first time around and my little just turned one a few weeks ago, so I think I'm pretty current, but these two items stump me.

    @agogo1 - yep I have a Feb15 baby! Were you on the Feb15 BMB?

See I've ONLY been considering side by side strollers -- to me they just seem llogical (idk why I feel that way, ha). I do know that the City Mini double fits through most doorways. I haven't done too much research on the others.
  • I love the city select because you can configure it in all different ways, however, i don't think it would fair very well on trails.

  • We own a city select and a city mini double. there are pros and cons to both but in the end I prefer the city select over the city mini double.

My first two kids were 22 months apart and the select was perfect since the car seat adapter is awful for the city mini double. You can use the select earlier with a baby since the seat can be adjusted and face towards you. Also in a busy parking lot you can pull the select next to the car. The city mini double you cannot. The city mini double does not always fit through doorways (but better than most side by sides). I love the glider board attachment for the select as well.

the only time I preferred the city mini double is when we went to Disney and my kids were older.

It does fine on trails unless you are going up a curb with a heavy child in the front. When that would happen (my two year old was a big boy) I'd just lift the front up. The wheels are great on the stroller.
  • Ah get out of my head! I've been wondering about this too. I've got an older kid, though. My A13 moms have kinda poopooed sit n stands but that's what I'm most considering right now (specifically the Joovy VaryLight). Anybody have opinions? This may be a different post...

  • I want a double that can do more than just concrete. I have a BOB now and love it but I hate side by side strollers.

We will probably end up getting a Mountain Buggy One + stroller.

I have a 14 month old and a 3 1/2 year old. We have a Phil and Teds s4 with the double kit. I love it! I didn't want a side by side because I thought it was too bulky. The Phil and teds is like a single stroller, and there are so many great attachments to buy! Not sure what we're going to do now, I guess wear one of them ;)
  • Hmm, I don't know about off road terrain, but I've been looking at the Contours Options Elite.  I can't imagine trying to bring a double wide stroller through a shopping center or such, so a tandem one seems best for us.  I do know that the wheels are not inflatable.  I'm not sure if those types of wheels are better for dirt/grass.  If anyone has a Contours Options Elite, please let me know what you think of it!  Thanks so much!

  • @Lauren0216 the elite has few improvements from the regular(easier to get into storagebasket, larger canopies). otherwise it's pretty much the same as my model. it handles fine on level grass and packed dirt. it's harder to push but not impossible. I have found that the versatility of seating and ease of manoeuvring to be worth the compromise of the all terrain tires. the price for the stroller is so great with all it can do. we live in Colorado and do a lot of hiking. most of the hikes we do would not be suitable for any stroller regardless of how tough it is. I canactually fit this one in my mazda 3 trunk along with an umbrella stroller which was another huge plus. it also comes with one infant attachment when you buy and both regular seats. It bugs me when I have to shell out a ton of money and still have to pay more for it to work for me.

  • I have a contours options and I just love that thing.  Biggest kid always goes in the back otherwise steering is kind of a pain.. I love how you can reconfigure the seats!
  • We have a Pod Jogger Stroller, which I love. It can seat two, but it's still narrow enough to fit through all our doors. It also has the bike trailer attachment. Right now, I have the harnesses configured to just seat one in the middle, but will switch it to two when the time comes.

I only use the stroller for running though, not other outings. I could see the Pod being a pain for a trip with lots of ins and outs.

All that said, FTMs, I highly recommend just starting with a double if you are planning on more than one, especially if looking at one for running. That's too much money to spend twice!

  • I'm glad someone posted this. I LOVE LOVE LOVE my Bugaboo Cameleon3 stroller but there's no way the Donkey/Double is in my budget. Heck the Cameleon was only in my budget because of a family discount. I have the City Mini GT single and love that too, so I thought about getting the Double... but I'm crazy and like options. I may just go to Buy Buy Baby and test drive a couple to see what I prefer.

  • The Double Bob. Hands down. Good for jogging and off roading, fits through a standard sized door, fits in the trunk of my Prius. I got mine off Craigs to help with sticker shock.

This is definitely what I'm leaning towards. I'll test drive one in a store soon and keep my eye out for sales over the next several months!
  • @kmalls Keep your eyes peeled on Craigslist for gently used double bobs. The cheapest websites I've seen them on are Amazon and AlbeeBaby. I think they're releasing a new model soon, so the older models will likely be discounted before they're completely out of stock
