Mirena or Skyla?

Scheduled to get an IUD next week..I originally decided to go with the mirena because I hadn't heard of skyla. Now I'm reconsidering my options. If you're planning on getting an IUD, which are you going with and why? This will be my first time getting one!

Re: Mirena or Skyla?

  • I am probably going to get Mirena again. I had it for 2 years between my girls. I never had an issue with it and got pregnant immediately after removing it. I haven't looked into Skyla.

  • Mirena and skyla have the same hormone in them, but Mirena releases a higher dose of that hormone. In my mind, low dose of hormones sounds better than higher dose. But Mirena is good for 5 years where is skyla is only good for 3 years. Personally, I'm going with the Paragard copper IUD. I'm getting it Thursday at my PP checkup. It's good for 10 years (although I plan to have another LO in 2-3). Mirena/skyla tend to lighten or even stop periods which sounds nice! Paragard is more prone to worsen periods but I just prefer to be hormone free, I feel better when I'm not on hormonal BC.
  • I'm going with the paragard also when I go for my PP checkup.
  • I had the Mirena before getting pregnant; I LOVED it!  My periods were pretty much nonexistent and came right back to normal when removed. I will probably get it again unless my doctor recommends something different for this go around.

FYI...I can only speak to my experience, but the day it got "installed" it hurt like a mother.  Horrible cramping to the point I was in tears. I was perfectly fine the next morning, but the first 12-24 hours, it was equally as painful as labor.

  • My plan is for paragard to avoid hormones altogether, but I was reading last night that the hormones released by the IUD don't have the same effect as the pills, since the IUD is localized and the pills are absorbed/systemic. Something I plan to ask my MW about, since lighter periods sure would be nice! We don't plan to have any more children (and are confident in our decision), but I don't want to do anything permanent for a year or two.

  • I had mirena for 4 years before I got it taken out to conceive this baby. I loved everything about it, and if I was going to use a birth control again, that would be my choice. I haven't looked into skyla at all, but mirena was great.
  • Does anyone know if you have to inform your doctor's office that you want to get an IUD prior to your PP appointment to have them place it at that appointment? Or do you have to make another appointment and come back?

My MW said to let them know in advance that you want them to place it at your 6wk appt so they can schedule the appropriate amount of time.

Mine said the same thing. Also because they check ahead of time that it's covered by your insurance.

Thanks for your response =) That makes sense, I'll make sure to call them on Monday. I would hate to have to make it to another appointment.

  • I got my mirena Friday 3/25 and have had bleeding everyday since. It's more than spotting. I feel no cramps or pain. Is this normal? Should I call my Dr? My PP bleeding stopped a couple weeks ago.

My OB said that they like to wait until 10-12 weeks pp to place an IUD to ensure that your uterus has had enough time to heal after delivery. Maybe having it placed earlier has caused some additional bleeding for some of you?  I don't know, I've never had one before.  I scheduled mine for the end of May.  And yes, as others said, they need to know in advance in order to be ready to place it at your appt as well as they submit it to the insurance for pre-approval.

I had mine placed on Monday 3/28. I've had some spotting, but my Dr said not to worry unless you go through 2 or more pads in an hour. She also said there was a 'crappy honeymoon" period that some women go through with Mirena; she said for about 3 months I may be spotting and cramping but after that most women love it. I have a follow up with her to check placement and how I'm liking it in 3 months.

  • I heard some awful things about the mirena from friends- hair loss, weight gain, horrible headaches, ect. I won't use hormones so paragard was the clear choice for me. it was pretty uncomfortable getting it inserted- like a mild contraction lasting for a few minutes. afterwards, just bleeding and very mild cramps. doc said I don't have to get it removed for 12 years so it was so worth the bit of discomfort!
