Premie baby and NICU stay**LONG**

Hey Ladies! Just wanted to give you guys a little update on LO and share some of this experience with you too! Friday afternoon I started having bad headaches and my BP shot up so they decided to induce me due to Pre E. Saturday morning my baby girl showed up at 0625 weighing 4lbs 13oz and measuring 13 1/2 inches long! She came out kicking and screaming, so that made daddy and I happier then I think anything in the entire world (she was 34w1d) Due to her age and being premature, it is policy for her to be immediately taken by a special care team of neonatologists to be evaluated after birth. So we got to see her long enough for dad to cut the cord, and then off she went, screaming to the room next to us!!! While they were still cleaning me up, we could hear her screaming! And then a little less, and a little less, and a little less after that. It didn't take long for them to wheel me back to my room, but we didn't have our little girl to go with us. One of the nurses said that someone "should be in shortly" to let us know what was going on. Charlie was born at 0625, and it wasn't until almost 0745 that someone came into my room to tell me that she started having a really hard time breathing 10 minutes after she was born, and they needed to put her on CPAP and transfer her across the street to a children's hospital. Around 0830 the transport team brought her in to see me before she left, hooked up with IVs and CPAP and everything. I even got to touch her through the isolette for a second ;) and that's it. Off she went! Guys. Let me just tell you how heartbreaking that really is. To not get to hold her or really touch her or even feel her breathe on you, it's rough. For the first 24 hours of her life, we had 0 bond. Fortunately, 24 hours after delivery I was allowed to be released on a 'day pass' to go next door and spend the day with my baby! When we got there we learned that she had completely been taken off of CPAP, was breathing on her own, and the only thing they're doing to
her is supplementing through a NG tube and giving some IV fluid and antibiotics(because they manually broke my water it's protocol!)
we finally were able to touch her and hold her, and the doctor even came in and asked if I would try to feed her (she did super well with trying to latch and suck, her mouth is just so tiny!) so, the prognosis is good! They are hoping to release her a week from today, pending nothing else going wrong and she's able to eat/gain weight!
I wanted to share all of this with you because the emotional roller coaster is real. The ups and downs are quick, severe, and dramatic. I reached out to someone lastnight after having a huge meltdown, and it occurred to me how much this stuff really happens, but most importantly I learned this:
No matter what we do, we live in our CHILDRENS world now. Yep, that's right. They call the shots.
Everything that has happened thus far, and that continues to happen is all at Chars will. She calls the shots. There's not a single thing I could've done to change what happened to me, and I hope and pray that none of you ladies have to experience the flood of emotions that comes with being a parent to a premie baby (or even a baby that isn't premie, but I hope you get where I'm going with this..) but if you do, please ask for help. Don't be afraid to talk about it, to cry, or sleep or yell for a minute or eat the whole box of chocolates. You can do this mommas, and remember that we are all in this together

  • So glad she is doing better!!! It was probably the initial shock to her system as she adjusted, fantastic that she started figuring this big world out! I know how it is having your baby taken from you (though mine was taken 16 hours after she was born and we had bonding time), and I pray for a release from the hospital for her soon! Congrats mama :)

  • Congrats on your beautiful baby girl!
  • I went through a similar experience when my son was born. I couldn't hold him for the 1st 24hours and couldn't bf till he was 4 days old. Leaving the hospital without him was so hard. Once you have that little girl home she is all yours. That first day will make up for the first week. I promise!
  • Thank you for sharing your story. I hope you get to go home with her very soon. :)
