After going for my first ultrasound, I've found out I have whats called a blighted ovum. (Basically an empty sac). However, the body takes a while to notice the difference. I'm pretty disappointed, sad, depressed about it because we've been trying for about 6 months, however, knowing that there was never a baby developing does help me feel better about it because there is no loss of life.
At this point now, I've decided to wait for a natural miscarriage. It's been a week since I found out the bad news. I'm also unsure about the cost of a D&C here in Ontario, or if it's covered by insurance or ODSP, and after reading stories online, I'm afraid of receiving a bill for thousands. I have an anxiety disorder and I have a history of being prone to infections so I'm worried about infection, but I'm going to wait a few weeks before I even consider medical intervention. I'm also a little embarrassed to call ODSP or the insurance company to see if a D&C is covered, even though it's due to a miscarriage.
I feel slightly angry that the cost of a procedure that may be needed is something women should even have to worry about while dealing with a miscarriage.
Has anyone else been diagnosed with a blighted ovum and choose to wait it out? Or does anyone know the cost of the procedure here in Southern Ontario?
Re: Bad news after ultrasound.
I would call your insurance company to see how it works.
I am also sorry that you are going through this.

I also wanted to ad, I don't know how far along you are, but have you spoken to your OB/MW about the pros and cons of waiting? I ask because I had a mmc due to a blighted ovum (at least they think that's the case, but also think it's possible baby stopped developing and was reabsorbed)
My pregnancy stopped developed at 8 weeks, and we found out at the 12 week scan. I had been spotting a bit the couple of days before that. The day after the scan I started bleeding heavily, and ended up heamorrhaging and having an emergency D&C.
I don't tell you all that to scare you (it all worked out fine, and I went on to conceive easily a few months later and now have a beautiful 5 mth old boy) I tell you because apparently the risk of heammorrhaging goes up after about 10 weeks, and so it's good to be aware of what constitutes heavy bleeding and at what point you should seeks medical help (I believe the general advice is that if you're soaking a pad in an hour then to seek care)
I assume your OB has talked you all through this, but I just wanted to say that I have anxiety too and I know how hard it can be knowing what decision to make for your own well-being.
Best wishes working through this difficult time!

Anyhow, I've decided I'm going to get a D&C next week if it hasn't happened naturally by then. I'm very prone to infection so I am still worried about that, and my Dr agrees it would be wise considering my history.
Thanks again guys
