Please direct me if this has been covered.
Mom EBF, and finally found DD takes the MAM bottle without a fight. So thankful to know I can leave her with someone and she will take a bottle. However, when eould be the best time to pump since I EBF. I know timing is everything. Any suggestions??

  • Can you fix the subject line? Also there is a breast feeding forum up at the top. Might be a good place to check out!

  • I pump first thing in the morning. I usually get up an hour or two and before DD and pump. Since she mostly sleeps through the night I get the best yield at this time. You can pump after each feeding but I find that to be frustrating, especially if you just want enough for the occasional bottle as opposed to building a big stash.
  • I would pump after the first feed of the day, that's when I get the most milk. I also pump after the last feed at night.
  • I pump during every nap because it's the only time I can put DD down. However if someone else is home I'll pump after I feed her.
I'm fairly lucky because even if she wakes up immediately after I pump and wants to eat she'll get enough because the pump doesn't empty my breasts fully unless I pump for a super long time. I'm almost happy about that because she is not consistent about feedings. Sometimes she eats every hour sometimes she'll stretch it out to two.
The general recommendation is directly after they eat or an hour afterwards to give you time to produce more because there will be enough time before the eat again.

  • My little guy only feeds from one side in the morning, so I always just pump the other side right afterwards. I definitely get more from pumping in the morning than any other time of day or evening.

I'm finding the 862 posts a bit much to read through for a specific question :)
  • Does your daughter sttn? If so, pumping in the early morning would be my suggestion. Most women have their highest yields at that time. Otherwise, I say pump after first morning feed or if DD only nurses on one side, pump the other side (some say pump and nurse at the same time. That's physically impossible for me, but if you can, go for it).
  • I pump at 10:30 at night right before going to bed since she sleeps until about 5:30 and I don't get too full. Then I pump at 6:30am before heading to work because I can't pump until 10:30am.

I don't think she meant she has to read thru the whole thing but there is a forum dedicated to the breastfeeding topic. Any time I have a question regarding breastfeeding or pumping, I ask in there instead of going thru all the pages and I usually get pretty good responses
  • I only pump after the first feed usually around 5 am then go back to bed. It serves a dual purpose because LO only eats from one side and my breats are so full. I still get about 3 oz on the side my LO just ate from! So I get relief and build my stash. No need to pump any other time.

For me highest yield was morning.
  • I pumped first thing in the morning after his feed and last thing at night after his last feed

I post a lot in the breastfeeding thread. People have asked really similar questions and we don't tell them to find the answer, we answer the new question to the best of our ability given our own experiences. :)

We're happy to help repeat questions :) but there is a search be at the bottom of the thread if you are worried about repeating something. But it's not a big deal.

I pumped in the middle of the night before I went back to work. DS sleeps through the night allowing me to do that. I usually got about 9oz. Now I pump one side in the morning and nurse from the other.

Thanks, and no that's not what I meant, but everyone takes comments differently. Looks like you've got tones of support here anyways!
