At what age can baby fly internationally?

Hello ladies!
I may be jumping the gun- as my little lady hasn't come out just yet. However, my certain someone and I are planning on taking her to Russia to meet the grandparents. I'm wondering- does anyone know when would be ideal to travel a 12 hour flight with a baby? Of course considering her temperament and health as a factor at that time.
Thanks!

Re: At what age can baby fly internationally?

  • I'm taking my little one to Australia (from Canada) at 6 months. I know plenty of people who have flown before that point though. I don't think there's any restriction on it to be honest, unless maybe they're a preemie

  • I would wait at a minimum until they have had their first round of vaccinations (2 months I think)

Didn't think of that but that's great advice. Especially if you're paranoid about unvaccinated people like me!!
  • Hey! This is very relevant for me, actually! I am heading to my hometown of Toronto (Canada) from LA in August for my sister's wedding - it's a 4-5 hour flight or so. We decided on the second week of August for a few reasons: her first round of vaccinations ought to be done by then; her birth certificate/passport ought to be ordered in and in hand by then; and she will have (at about 4 months) started to need less feedings per day, so easier on me (who is travelling to Toronto by myself with her, my SO can't take his vacation until the next week).

    Hope that helps! :)

  • Ditto previous poster, wait at least until 2 month vaccinations.

We flew from Chicago to England when my son was about 3 months old. Remember, you need to time getting a passport as well. The flight was fine, he slept the whole way there and back.

  • Same, wait at least 2 months for vaccines. But also anytime under 6 months traveling is way easier because they sleep and eat most of the flight. Once DS was crawling he was no longer content to sleep the entire flight.
  • We flew to Ireland with our first at 6 weeks...no issues at all.
  • Thank you ladies!

  • As soon as they have a passport :-)
I keep hearing people say the younger the easier, as they just sleep/eat/poop. Gets harder once they get bored. We have a long haul flight in January ahead of us from Australia to Europe, so that will be interesting. I guess I can find out for myself then :-)

  • This has been on my mind as well. I want to take a trip to the USA to see my family next year and I have a cousin getting married in August. I know that you *can* fly with a baby as long as the passport is in order but I've been more concerned with what age (say 2 months birth and 2 years) will be the least annoying for two 24 hour flights. Sounds like sooner is better.

Once they walk it gets interesting, I've been told. A friend said, spending a long flight walking up and down the aisle, slouched behind a toddler, was not soooo much fun. Better again when they're older and more easily entertained.
So I guess it's true, that sooner rather than later applies :-)

  • My experience - we took a 5 hour trip from Boston to SF when DS was 10-months old (and still nursing), and then a 1.5 hour trip when he was 15-months old.

The 1.5 hour trip with a toddler was torture compared to the 5 hour trip with a baby.  The longer trip wasn't perfect, but at least he would nurse and fall asleep and cuddle.  The 1.5 hour trip, he just wanted to be running around.

  • I will be making the 12 hour trip home to Mexico from Germany as soon as her passports are in order hopefully at four weeks. My doctors said that was the earliest she would reccomend.
