Past point of exhaustion.

I have hit my wall of exhaustion I think. I can't remember the last time I got more than a couple hours of sleep at night, and I feel like a zombie. I just can't sleep and can't get comfortable at night. I sleep for a couple hours then wake up in horrible pain and have to readjust my position, but there's only 2 to choose from, left side and right side. My exhaustion is really starting to affect my work cause I can't think straight. Also, today I'm so out of it I'm dizzy and really woozy feeling. I just feel really off. I tried sleeping downstairs in my recliner, but it's really bright because of all the windows and there's tons of noises (I have to have a pitch black, silent room to sleep).  I don't know what to and wasn't sure if you ladies had any suggestions or anyone else in my boat. Something's got to change, but I don't know what to do and I'm desperate. I can't keep "functioning" like this.

  • I'm sorry you haven't been able to get much sleep. That's terrible! Have you tried a pregnancy pillow? Maybe you can bring the recliner upstairs into your room? What kind of pain are you talking about? Hip pain, belly pain...? I know sometimes I wake up with a RLP or painful braxton hicks and usually drinking a lot of water gets it to go away. I always sleep with a pillow between my legs for hip pain. Hope you can get some sleep soon!

  • This might be a dumb question, but have you tried propping your hips/back with pillows yet? I totally get not being able to get comfortable at night. The struggle is real. I've found that the more pillows I have, the better. Normally I wouldn't jump right to medication, but if you've tried everything else I think there are some pregnancy-approved sleep aids that you can take? Maybe it's time to reach out to your doctor and see what they suggest. Hugs to you, and hope you find some relief soon!
  • Exercise has been the best sleep remedy for me.
I get my best sleep on days I am most active. Such as sundays, I clean my entire house every sunday ( my H and I both work full time, have 2 dogs and a toddler, the weekends are the only free time we have to clean).
I have the best sleep sunday nights.
Also, I have a body pillow which helps immensely  (Ive heard several good reviews about pregnancy pillows). I sit in front of a computer mon.-fri. so getting out and taking a walk in the evenings also helps with my sleep at night.

My first pregnancy, insomnia was a huge problem since I was sick through most of it, got very little exercise, had a desk job, and a very small apartment that hardly ever needed cleaning since it was just me and my H.
Im 27 weeks and haven't had to get up constantly at night yet to pee.
  • My dr recommended unisom for ms in first trimester and it was a huge help. I don't take it regularly now but if I've had a rough 3-4 nights in a row and feel on the verge of exhaustion (IE, I'm worried I won't make it to work the next day or if I do I'll screw something up because I'm so tired) I'll take 1/2 of a unisom. It's not ideal but sometimes you have to just get some sleep!!
  • I got the ok from my OB for Tylenol PM. I'll take only a half dose though, because I usually take a regular Tylenol at some point through the day. I'm on my feet coaching part of the day and the first half I'm sitting behind a sewing machine, so my back is the first thing to go, followed by hips and knees. I also use bio freeze!! Amazing topical roll on for my back. And lots of pillows.

  • I am sorry that you're feeling this way. I am feeling the exact same. I feel like a zombie. My toddler has been sick on and off for a few weeks and so I'm up with her, and my H has been getting up at 4:30am for the job he's currently on - so that impacts my sleep too. Throw the usual pregnancy stuff on top of that (like peeing 2-3x a night - and my sleep is brutal. Hoping you find some comfort, somehow!
  • I agree with PPs, but thought I would add that if the recliner is your most comfortable spot then you could pick up an eye mask and some ear plugs to drown out light and noise. They help me a lot and you can get both pretty cheap!
  • I agree with pp. Try lots of pillows in different positions until you're comfortable. I just got the snoogle body pillow. I think I like it. I didn't use anything but basic bed pillows for my other two pregnancies but thought I'd try something else this time. Good luck!!

  • Half a unisom.  I actually take it most nights, because without it, it's a total crapshoot.  I might wake up and be up for hours.  If I get into bed at a reasonable hour and take the unisom, MOST nights I'll actually sleep for at least 7 hours & feel ok.
  • I take unisom/Benadryl (they're the same medication).  I need to take benedryl most nights because I have hives and rashes from my weekly injections so the nice side effect is at least I get some sleep.  My dr said it's safe and I try to skip it if I'm not too itchy or broken out because I don't want to build up a tolerance with 12 shots left to go!
  • Thanks for the ideas ladies, I surround myself with pillows and call it my "nest" lol. It helped the first night I did it, but not since. I may try the eye mask and ear plug thing downstairs in my recliner. I want to get a pregnancy pillow, but don't want to feel like I wasted money if it doesn't work since they're so expensive. I'm thinking I may have to suck it up and get one, tho, since my nest of pillows isn't cutting it. I may try Benadryl, but my problem is mostly the hip and belly pain that wakes me, and of course the peeing at least once in the night.

  • Ugh. I hear you on this. I might be in the minority, but I got a pregnancy pillow from H for Christmas and I hate it. It was great in early pregnancy trying to train myself to side sleep but now I feel TOO constricted and I noticed it seems to make my hip/knee pain worse because I literally can't move at night. If burrowing yourself in pillows isn't working for you, I don't think a pregnancy pillow would be much more help. IMO.

I usually get tired around 9:30/10:00 but I try to stave off getting ready for bed until then that way I can "force" myself to stay up another half an hour or so. If I go to bed TOO early I'll toss and turn and pee all night. If I go to bed a little later than usual, I find I sleep better and usually only wake up maybe once to pee. I still wake up on my own around 6:00 no matter what, but I tend to at least sleep better on the nights I go to bed a little bit later. I'd rather sleep for 5 good hours than be in bed for 8 hours and only get about 4 frustrating hours of sleep. That's definitely a matter of preference but it might be worth trying!
  • Agree with PP, exercise has been my best trick. The days when I get a couple of good walks in I sleep so much better and overall has decreased pain and discomfort. Hope you can find some relief!!
  • I hope you feel better soon! I would be sure to walk at least 3 miles and drink 90 ounces of water every day. My midwife also told me to take my expires magnesium vitamin at night because it doubles as a sleep aid.

I am am with you on the dark quiet room. I wear a sleep masks it's headphones sometimes. I'm sure I look like an alien, but at least a sleeping one.
  • I miss sleep already! I am also waking up every hour or so from being uncomfortable! I am a back sleeper, so getting comfy on my sides has been a rough adjustment. I use the pillow between my legs to help with hip pain, but it doesn't always work. And flipping over (which I do all the time!) is so tricky with a carefully positioned pillow! Ugh. At least once baby arrives, we will have a worthwhile reason to wake up all night long! Hope it gets better for you soon! :)

I can empathize with you! If it wasn't for insomnia, I would 100% feel great this pregnancy. It's just so frustrating because you almost feel like it's self-inflicted (even though it's not)! I really despise when people say things like, "sleep now while you still can." Oh okay. Thanks for your sound advice.

I'm sure you tried the old pillow trick. I found one pillow between my legs, one behind my back, and a couple behind my head.  I turn on the ceiling fan, regardless of temperature, to keep air circulation. Also, I use a humidifier to keep the air moist for dry nasal passages. I limit liquids after 8 pm. However, I always keep a glass of water by my bed for peace of mind. Talk to your OB, but mine said Benadryl is an approved medication that can help with occasional sleep problems. Best of luck and hope you can get some solid sleep sometime soon.
  • So...the other night I wasn't able to sleep so I tried my recliner and just couldn't sleep. So I decided to test out our guest bed that has a really thick foam mattress topper on it. It was heaven! I sunk down into it and it hugged my curves so I didn't have pressure points on my hips and my belly wasn't weighed down. So last night I asked my H to drag it upstairs so I could test it out on our bed (it's full size and our bed is queen) We put it on and poor H has about 6 inches that it drops off on his side, but he said it's worth it if I can sleep. I slept pretty good last night, except for some reason I kept waking up on my back and my hips/legs would be falling asleep. Other than that, I slept better than I have in a while. So for you other ladies, i'm recommending a foam mattress topper.....so far so good with it!
