Emerson a girl name now?

We're between Emerson and Anderson for our boy, leaning towards Emerson. The only thing holding me back is that the name seems to have met the fate of Madison, Addison, Avery etc. where it's becoming a more predominant girls name. Am I over thinking?

Re: Emerson a girl name now?

  • I think of Emerson as a girls' name. I like Anderson much better anyway.

  • Americans are kinda, stupid  when it comes to trends,  name trends in particular . Case in point,  Madison kicked off from an 80s movie. The character picked a New York street name as her new name. People thought this was a good idea.

So now people think anything that ends in -son is a girl's name. It isn't,  but people are pretty good at ignoring what they don’t like. If you love Emerson for your son, keep it on your list, but his generation will probably assume it's a "girl's name" because of usage.
  • The only Emerson I know is a girl but I don't think it's a girl name. I don't know any Anderson's (except Anderson Cooper) but to be honest, imo they are both such strong surnames I think I'd skip them for that reason alone. Also, what @Bringmemylongswordho said.
  • I guess it's going to be 50/50. I still meet Madison and Addison men, they said it wasn't a big deal. Both of my boys have surnames as first names, Garrett and Dean, so I guess that's what I've always been drawn to. This is why none of my kids have names until they're born haha.

  • I would never think of Emerson as a girl name. It's all boy to me, and much better than Anderson.

  • I know three young Emersons (ages 6 and under). All of them are girls.
  • I have never heard of a girl named that. How ridiculous. I think of Ralph Waldo Emerson. Do people not get the reason these names end in "son" is because they are for someone's son?
  • I prefer Emerson over Anderson and think Emerson is all boy.
    Same here.
  • I know a little girl named Emerson James, they were team green and I think they were going to use the name either way. It's NMS

  • It's a cute name, not my style for a girl either. I guess I've alway felt strongly against unisex names so it's odd for me to be so drawn to one.

  • I think girl.  Emerson is one of the very few unisex/boy names on girls that I really do like better for a girl.  I've never known a male Emerson.
  • I know an Emerson and an Emersyn (girls).  I think of it as a boy name and prefer Anderson over Emerson.

The only Emerson I know is a one year old girl. I really dislike it on a girl.

  • Emerson is all boy to me too, especially since, SON is in the name! But sadly, I'd just avoid it as well as Avery, Aubrey, Addison-type names. Love Anderson though!
  • I've known one Emerson (boy) and one Emerson (girl) . To me it is a boy's name. My preference would be Anderson.
  • Although Emerson is masculine, I know four little girls named Emerson. So when I hear it, I assume it's a girl. I like Anderson better anyway. I know a little boy named Anderson (NN Anders), and he is so cute!

  • Do you all think it's any different than names such as Riley, Jamie, Kelly etc? I just suck at picking names and I'm my husband prefers this over Anderson, I guess I kinda do too. :(

  • Emerson is a boy name. First and only Emerson I know is a 90 year old man. I hate that it's becoming s girl name. I worked with a woman who's granddaughter was naming her baby girl Emerson and she just couldn't understand why anyone would name a baby girl Emerson. Sounds like from this thread more people hear it as a girls name nowadays.

Both of them are surnames to me and I would never consider them as a first name.
  • Even though Emerson is traditionally a male name I wouldn't use it on a boy since it has gone to the girls. Your child's generation will most likely view it as a girl name. Emerson is now just like Ashley, Courtney, Shannon etc.
  • The only Emerson I know is a 9 month old boy.
  • Yeah, I love it but we're going to let it go.  My husband suggested Emory, which is cute and unpopular so we'll see. Thank you all

That people would slap Emmerson (SON) on a girl. It's ridiculous.

Emmerson for a girl.. i mean you don't TRY to be cool. You either are or you aren't. People who think they're being cool by calling their female child emmerson are not.
  • Emerson is and will always be a masculine name. It's terrible that people stick their little girls with names that literally mean "son of".

Boy names on girls is ridiculous. It won't make them stronger females adults, raising them to be independent and free-thinking does.
  • Emerson is 100% boy in my book. My kids are a little older, so if using this as a girl's name is a more recent trend, it's off my radar screen.  I don't know a single Emerson, much less a girl!

I would seriously side-eye someone who uses "Emerson" for a girl.  It has "son" right in it!
High School English teacher and mom of 2 kids:

    DD, born 9/06/00 -- 12th grade
    DS, born 8/25/04 -- 7th grade
  • DD has a friend at daycare named Emersyn.  Obviously it's a girl though, I mean that's why they used the Y!

Don't even get me started on how a Y cannot replace the same sound as an O would make (SYN is like SIN not SON).  The little girl is adorable, and I've never met her parents, but I have a feeling if I ever did I would be trying very hard to not roll my eyes directly at them.

  • I definitely think of it as a boy name (it ends in son...), have only known male Emersons and I'm a HS teacher so if there are a ton of little girls with this name it is definitely a trend which means it will end, while Emerson being a boy name is not a trend and will endure.  Between Anderson and Emerson I prefer Emerson.
  • Logic and history aside, I associate it with girls. Maybe because other popular 'Em' names are feminine?
