Is it necessary to induce period to start meds?

I'm curious and would love all of your experience on this! I don't get my period/ovulate so I'm wondering if lining is thin/estrogen low, does a period (withdrawal bleed) need to happen to start meds or can the doctor just choose a random start date? It doesn't seem like a bleed would be necessary if the lining is already thin, but maybe it is?

Thanks to all of you in advance!

Re: Is it necessary to induce period to start meds?

  • Hi there, I am new to the board and only had my first RE appointment this week, but I got the impression from him that it would be necessary in my case... I'll be curious what others have to say too!

  • My guess @mwendell24 is that in your case it would be necessary in order to do testing, but I'm not sure. I know prior to my testing they did require that.
  • I think the reason for that is that they want you to have a 'fresh' lining for a new cycle to increase the chances of ovulation induction working.
  • Thanks @KidShrink I was hoping not because I don't bleed from provera/progesterone alone so will need to do 3 weeks of estrogen first :(
  • @runfast @mwendell24 In my experience a withdrawal bleed has been required. I took a month or so off from treatments and since I don't get a regular period (PCOS) I was expecting to start progesterone before going back on meds. I ended up getting a period naturally but it sucks to have to wait even longer than the length of a normal cycle. GL!
    Me: 33, PCOS with anovulation
    DH: 36, No known issues
    TTC since 11/2014
    1000mg Metformin daily

    Oct-Dec 2015: Letrozole 5mg, Ovidrel, TI = BFN x 2
    Feb-May 2016: Letrozole 5mg, Ovidrel, TI, Prometrium = BFN x 3
August 2016: Clomid 100mg no response, Letrozole 5mg, Ovidrel, TI, Prometrium = BFN

  • I have a very thin lining and require 21 d of 6mg estrace to get a period and my doctor had me get a period twice before starting any medications. The first time he wanted to see if I would naturally cycle after the boost and then the second round was to set me up for clomid.
