April 2016 Moms

Induction

Hey ladies!!! So i do not plan on being induced but obviously there's not much else I can do if i go over 2 weeks. Im just curious, I've heard so many women tell me that getting induced with pitocin makes labor much worse but my midwife told me that pitocin was actually very good. Nobody can seem to give me details though!  :( does anyone know why getting induced is so much worse? And how I can prevent it? Thanks so much in advance !

Re: Induction

  • Pitocin contractions are much stronger than naturally occurring contractions, from what I understand. I was induced with DS, so pitocin contractions are all I know. My personal induction experience was quick and uncomplicated, but it's different for everybody depending on other factors.

There's nothing guaranteed that you can do to prevent, but assuming you're not due til April since you're posting on this board, you've got some time yet.

  • Keep in mind that the pitocin dosage used now at most hospitals is considerably lower now than it was, even 5 years ago. So the experiences of moms induced with pit years ago, may have been harder than more recent ones.
  • I agree with @cmjenkies.  All I've ever know is what induced labor contractions feel like.  They are very painful.  I went until I was 6cm dilated before I broke down and got the epidural.  This time around I will get the epidural sooner, induced or not.  I don't know the best way to describe the pain except that I felt like I would rip my own belly off if it meant the pain would go away.

  • I was induced 6 years ago. The contractions were super painful. I had an epidural fairly early on, probably by 4cm, and was still in a TON of pain. I have no idea what dosage they were using, but I wanted to die, even with the epi.

With baby #2 I ended with c/s because baby was breech, but I went into labor spontaneously. I was in labor for several hours and dilated to 5-6cm before they got me into the OR. I was barely in any pain up to that point. I was easily walking and talking through contractions and hospital staff wasn't even convinced I was in active labor until they observed me for an hour and I dilated 3cm in that time. Obviously I have no idea what it would have felt like as labor progressed or after my water broke, but the early labor was definitely way easier than my induction.

  • My doctor used Cervadil overnight with DD.  I was overdue.  They started Pitocin at 8am the next morning and I only got 1 unit of the 20 they can give you. My DD Was born at 2:56pm. It wasn't that quick, but for a first baby it wasn't an all day thing.  I think the Cervadil really did the trick more than the Pit did.
  • I was induced with pitocin with DD and it did nothing for me. It didn't make me dialate and the contractions weren't more painful. I only started to have painful contractions once they broke my water, and they took me off pitocin when they did that. Don't know how much help that is, but there you go lol

  • Were any of you induced moms induced early? I'm at 35 weeks and I find out Thursday when they will be inducing me. One doctor wants to do it at 37-38 weeks and the other doctor wants to wait til 39. I'm just wondering if the process is any different since I've only known moms who were induced because they were past their due date.

I went into labor naturally at 38+4/5 (overnight) and then was given Pit to continue labor as it stalled early in the afternoon.  My water had been broken already and I was scheduled to be induced at 39 weeks.
I didn't notice any difference between the regular contractions and the ones on Pit other than that they went back to being every 3-4 minutes instead of 8-10. The pain factor increased, but at about the same rate as it had before; slowly but steadily getting worse as I got closer to delivery.

  • I was induced with my first, but went into spontaneous labor with #2 and #3. I don't think there was any real significant difference between the pitocin contractions and those brought on by my own body. I thought that they were both pretty painful!
  • I was induced early, but it was only at 39w3d, so not THAT early. I was already 4cm and 100% effaced, but no signs of labor coming - this is what I mean as far as different factors determine the process they follow. Since my cervix was favorable, they went straight to pitocin and fluids, then IV pain meds, broke my water, then finally the epi. They started my pitocin around 8-830A and DS was born at 1:30P.
  • I received pit for my first at 38+6 for failure to progress after my water broke, and the intensity of the pain was definitely higher than my other two. That said, the pain has become easier to deal with with each baby. So, it might have just been the fear of childbirth pain making it worse.

  • I was induced with my son. Contractions were very painful but it's all I know, too. Plus I got an epidural which helped a lot! Had a vaginal delivery and all went well. Took exactly 13 hours from start of pit to baby out of my body. There's really nothing you can do to prevent it, the baby will come when they want to! I was induced on my due date because they knew he was going to be big (he was 9lb 3oz and 22.25") and my swelling was terrible and BP was bordering pre-e levels.

  • I was induced with both my kids and have an induction date for this one as well. I didn't have any problems or  a lot of pain at all. I think it's different for everyone, just like all medications.
  • I was induced yesterday (well technically the 5th) at 34w1d. They initially used a cervical balloon to help dilate and also used cytotec to help thin. The combination got me to about 4 cm. contractions started picking up and I got an epidural at 5cm which is when they broke my water and started the pit. Even with the epi I had a LOT of discomfort but not pain. I delivered at 0625 on the 6th. So only about 16 hour labor, for a FTM I'm pretty satisfied.
  • I was induced at 36 weeks with my 2nd due to dangerously high BP.

I don't remember the labor with pitocin being bad at all. I got an epidural though. I fell asleep for an hour....woke up, realized the baby was RIGHT THERE, called for the nurse and doc and out she came. It was pretty easy honestly.
  • I was induced at 38w 3d with #1 (pre-e).  They started me on Cervidil over night which just gave me contractions all night, but ZERO progress with dilation and effacement.  They started me on Pitocin at 5 am the next morning and immediately I had intense contractions that were about 1.5 minutes and came every 45 seconds.  They broke my water around 11 and the contractions became insane.  I hadn't wanted an epidural, but asked for one about an hour later.  (It made me throw up so we turned it off) and I continued pain med free like this and then hard labor started at 9pm.  I pushed for an hour: second degree episiotomy, had to hold back pushing once his head was out as the cord was wrapped around his neck twice, and at some point I was put on oxygen.

There isn't anything you can do to avoid being induced.  The longer you can go without being induced, the chances are better that your cervix will be favorable for the induction and things might be a tad easier.
