OHSS Won't Go Away - Help!

I did not do my embryo transfer and I'm glad I chose not to.

I am six days after my egg retrieval eight days post HCG trigger.  I am still having horrible symptoms and I know I'm not pregnant.  I have not had a bowel movement in eight days (besides a few very minor ones only with the help of an enema, and it was't that productive) and I am still 21 pounds heavier than I was on the morning of my egg retrieval.  My RE keeps just saying it will go away.  Am I over-reacting, is this how it should be, I don't know what to do but I'm going crazy!!

Me: 28 - no known issues DH: 32 - MFI - low count and low morphology TTC since 3/2014 IUI #1 cycle started

Re: OHSS Won't Go Away - Help!

  • Hi and sorry to hear you are having OHSS.
Its tough to have, I was lucky to only have gone through it very very very mildly.

I do agree with your RE that it will go away, and it doesn't sound like you have any symptoms that fall under moderate or severe.
Which of course doesn't make it less horrible for you! (But it might make you worry less)

As for being able to go to the toilet, drink lots and lots and lots of water.
Here in Norway we have something called 'fruit and fiber' which are small bricks that we can eat to help with that. They must have something similar in other countries.

GL,hope you are soon feeling like your old you!

The main trick is rest and hydration. Hydration doesn't mean water, it means balanced fluid and mineral intake. Try Smartwater or a similar electrolyte beverage (avoid sugary drinks though). Keep communicating with your dr so that if a drain is needed they act quickly. Other than that you just need to let your body heal and it does take time. I had swelling/fluid for 10wks after retrieval. If you have future cycles, ask for a double Lupron trigger (this almost completely eliminates severe OHSS). GL and hope you feel better!
  • Good morning! I'm sorry you are dealing with this. My OBGyn recommended senecot (laxative) for me when I was really backed up. It's plant based and super gentle. Perhaps you could check with your doctor and try it.

  • Im sorry you are experiencing this. I went through the same thing but it only lasted maybe 3 days. I had a lot of smart water and Gatorade. I also took a stool softener. I usually go at least once a day and when that wasnt happening I started to panic and did what I could to get things moving. Try activia yogurt and prune juice too.
  • Prune juice totally helps. I had mild OHSS and did the prune juice thing. Keep drinking Gatorade and eating salty foods.

  • So, I am back to bed rest, OMG SO BORING. I spoke with my nurse earlier today and she told me to avoid salt but eat lots of high protein foods -  seems to be a contradiction to what everyone else is told.
The bloating is interesting - giving me an idea of what it will be like to have a bump!
