Infertility

Egg Retrieval on Tuesday, FIRST IVF.

Hello ladies! So our TTC journey started just over a year ago, we were lucky enough to get in with a wonderful RE after about 6 failed Clomid cycles.
My first cycle with my RE we started with Gonal-F and follistim, NOTHING was responding so they basically gave up hope. On day 19 I went in for a final scan and had 49 follicles!!!!!!! AHHHH. They told me we would need to transfer to IVF  and added in a bunch more injectables( Which is great because now it will be WAY less expensive ) I am currently day 25 and my egg retrieval has been scheduled for this coming Tuesday. Day 27! I had no idea they could even do things this late. but I have always been a late ovulater with my PCOS

I am triggering tonight with 15u of HCG and 1ml of Lupron.  Have any of you done both? I should have asked why, but I was still in a little bit of shock that we are gong to be triggering tonight!

I have been told I will probably develop OHSS and therefore my chances of doing a fresh transfer are slim. We are nervous about doing a frozen, I don't know why... Mostly I think we just want to get it over with already!

Do any of you have any tips or suggestions on how to prepare for my egg retrieval/transfer? We really never thought we could afford IVF so I never really reasearched much on it and that has me very worried now that we are looking it in the eye. I guess it's all for the better...
It has come as such a surprise and has been such a whirlwind. We are so excited but seriously so so nervous.
I am nervous as I think I only have about 6 follicles that are mature as of today, lots are close to mature (at like 14mm) But only 6 are there as of now.. hopefullly the trigger will push them through? Does that sound like an ok number??

Anyways, any suggestions are appreciated. I am just so nervous!!!
I wish I would have had more time to prepare...
Thanks in advance TTC sisters (:

Re: Egg Retrieval on Tuesday, FIRST IVF.

  • Also, the nurse called me and said I will need to do a water/vinegar douche tomorrow night and the morning of retrieval. I have never even heard of such thing.. I will ask tomorrow which brand to buy...anyone else done this??

  • So sorry that you have to be on this board, but yay for having 6 mature follicles! I wanted to respond to your OHSS. If you do develop it, you should NOT do a fresh transfer. I was slightly over stimmed and regret the decision to transfer our two best on a cycle that had no chance at success. Freezing might sound a bit scary, but it is worth it to wait until your body is ready to receive embryos and maintain a pregnancy so you don't lose any of your embies.

Preparation for both: Make sure your DH is ready to fully take care of you and your household. On the day of your retrieval all you're going to want to do is laze around, thanks to the anesthesia (assuming you are in the US and put under like most of us are). I personally didn't have much pain the day of retrieval, but the day after I could barely get up from the couch to go to the bathroom, let alone try to do anything productive! At my clinic they ask for 48 hours of modified bed rest (ok to do quick showers, get up to use the bathroom and sit up during meals) after every transfer. If yours recommends the same, I suggest you listen to them. If your DH can't fully take care of you, see if someone else can come for a visit such as a family member or friend.

I would recommend having lots to do within your reach. Watching tv for 15 hours a day sounds like fun, but it can get boring pretty quickly.

I have never heard of douching before a retrieval. Not sure what that is about.

Good luck and FX for an easy, successful procedure!

  • Hi and welcome!
Sorry you have to join us ladies, but the women (and men) are wonderful and a great support.

I agree with the above, do not push for a fresh transfer if you are over stimulated.
I was only slightly that (19 follicles and 18 egg retrieved) and my body was making over-hours to recover.
The transfer ended up in a BFN which kinda was expected if I think back.

Don't worry about the FET, I've done two of those and both my mind and my body was way more relaxed.

To prepare: Make sure you can relax the days after ER. I was in quite some pain during and after (I was awake during ER), but decided to man up and went on a sightseeing trip with my mum.
Could I do it all over, I would have just taken is easy, and relaxed.
Think tips @aanddm2014 has given are good to follow. I would have done it that way if I should go through ER again.

    GL on your journey!
