12 oz??

Now I'm metric but I'm pretty sure this is a pretty small amount for an infant to gain in one month.

Olive has only gained 12 oz since her 2 month appt. (Give or take - we weighed her ourselves with a non-digital scale but even if it's off, it's likely not THAT off) She will be 3 months old on the 10th

She is still in size 1 diapers and they seem bigger on her than they were two weeks ago.

My milk supply is good. She stops eating long before I run dry. I'm still seeing milk when i squeeze.

I went back to work last Thursday so for two days, she was eating very little - she's taking her bottle now but not much. But two days should not have produced a significant loss.

I'm worried.

EDIT: Yes, i realize i need to speak to the pediatrician and will be calling tomorrow. But they'll say what they always say "Is she peeing? Is she hungry and not being fed? Is she acting hungry after she finishes eating?" - and the answers are always the same. Yes. She's peeing. She's pooping every four days or so. She's fed constantly and she's content after eating most of the time. If she's not i try feeding her more and if she continues to fuss, it's something else.

So i'm asking to see if other mums have seen such a small gain in a month.

Re: 12 oz??

  • Babies should be gaining .5 to 1 oz per day per the LCs at my support group. At DD's last baby weigh,  she had gained 3 oz in one week. One LC said that it was less than she'd like to see. The other wasn't worried but suggested adding a feeding and giving her a big bottle before bed. (My supply dips at night,  so I pump a big bottle in the morning and give it to her at night.)

I could be off but,  based on those experiences,  I wouldn't panic.  However,  I think calling the ped is a good idea,  and I'd keep monitoring.

I will add that DD is two days older than Olive and, after gaining weight like crazy after birth, it seems to have slowed in general.  I was wondering if she had to gain a lot because she was so small and now that she's more caught up,  her body is adjusting.

  • Since I've been back at work, I think my LO has actually lost weight. I have a regular bathroom scale that I put him on from time to time and last week he was 14lbs and today it said 13. I'm not terribly worried at them moment & it could be that when we're away from them they don't have us to comfort nurse. That's really my only guess. If I see a dramatic weight change I'll be taking him in but for now I'm going to monitor him.
  • I've talked about DS having issues and I know that's part of it but he really struggled to gain weight. By 6 months he had barely broken 10 pounds and had started at 8lbs 7 oz at birth. DD was 11lbs 9oz at her two month and weighed an oz less than he did at birth. So babies grow at different rates.

The best thing that helped was the doctor we started with with DS told us as long as he's hitting milestones, gaining weight (however fast or slow), and had at least a little fat reserve then everything was great. We went over this with the pediatrician when we switched doctors and he agreed entirely and told us from what he saw he wasn't concerned in the least either.

I'll also add, DD gets bloated from gas and has periods when the bloating goes down and her diapers appear significantly looser.
  • Ok this all makes me feel better. @Mizuiro007 Olive definitely has fat to spare if you ask me. Her nickname (one of about a thousand) is Li'l Chunks. Her legs are kind of skinny and she's narrow in the hips but i am too. It could just be her body type. She could have weird proportions like her momma.
  • Yes, from the pictures you've posted she looks like she's healthy weight and very happy.

Another thing that might happen with the diapers is both of my kids when they go through a growth spurt look thinner for a while after. We used to comment with DS it was like those Stretch Armstrong dolls. He looked like someone would take him by his head and feet and stretch him out in his sleep. Then they gradually fatten back up again.

Ah yes.. she could have gained some height.. Good point. I didn't measure her height. Just got hubbub to take her weight on Saturday.

I'd be interested to see if she's hit 2 feet yet (12 inches in a foot right?) She was 22 inches at her 2 month checkup.
  • My son, Everett, has been growing on the slower side and has only been gaining a little over a lb a month. Our pediatrician has assured us many times it's fine and not to worry for all those reasons you mentioned. Everett is 10lbs3.5oz and just shy of 12 weeks, in size 1 diapers also and he has the scrawniness chick legs but I'm seeing some tiny fat rolls now!
  • Adeline and Olive were similar weights at birth of I'm not mistaken (5 lbs 13 oz at birth 5 lbs 7 oz at discharge) and she's a day older.
Her gain was super quick the first month and has started slowing down. She was 8 lbs 3 oz at one month and 9 lbs 15 oz at two months. At almost three months she's somewhere around 11 lbs (this is a guess based on the same method you used- last month I weighed her on the same day the doctor did and our scale reading was 2 lbs heavier than the pediatric scale so I've rounded down).
It makes sense to me that they start gaining slower as they get older considering they are so much more active now and their muscles are really developing in addition to all the growing.
Obviously mention your concerns to the pedi, but is there an LC group anywhere you can go to? My hospital has a free group on Wednesday mornings with the LC who has a pediatric scale for weighed feeds. If you had access to that you might get a more accurate idea of both her weight and intake.
If not a weight check at the pediatrician might be worth the copay for peace of mind.
  • I'm not a pediatrician but a gain is a gain in my book.  As long as she is gaining I don't think you have anything to worry about.  Babies grow at different rates.  They also slow down and speed up at different rates.  You never know, she may go through a growth spurt over the next week and gain a ton.  I would only worry if she is losing, not gaining at all over time, or is not peeing or pooping regularly.
