Anyone having problem keeping fasting sugar level in normal in GD?

hi,

I was diagonised with GD about 10 days ago and I have been on diabetic diet from a week now. My after meals numbers have been good but my fasting numbers are always high - between 102-117.  I was avoiding any bedtime snack this week because I thought it would increase my fasting numbers more. But I read last evening that bedtime snacks actually helps to keep fasting numbers low. So I tried one protein snack last night 30 mins before going to bed - plain Greek yogurt with some pumpkin seeds. But the numbers were same this morning. Anyone trying different snack at bedtime to keep fasting numbers low ? Please help!! I have to go to my doctor on Monday  :(:'(

  • You really have little control over fasting numbers. With my first pregnancy since my fasting numbers kept creeping up they put me on metformin once a day to control that. It was all I needed aside from controlled diet.

  • I actually wake up starving in the middle of the night, so I eat a snack. That has helped a bit, but as mentioned above you have little control. Everyone's sugar spikes at night naturally, but it's only an issue for diabetics. I was put on the metformin for my fasting numbers last pregnancy as well. One pill once a day. My fasting numbers continue to creep higher as well, so I suspect I'll have to do the same this time.

Try not to be too hard on yourself. It isn't your fault and it's not something you can really control.

  • Yup.  But at the  beginning of my pregnancy my A1C was 11.  My A1C for my 28 week bloodwork came down to 6.8.  I was told that is more important than actual blood sugar levels b/c they only measure for that point in time where the A1C is an overall picture.   I can't get my fasting numbers under control.  Have not been able to the entire pregnancy and now in the third trimester is it even worse.  I am already on 2000mg of Metformin and at 30units and counting of insulin a day and counting.  My doctor has talked about hospitalizing me for a couple of days to see how much insulin it will take to get the fasting numbers to where they are supposed to be.   As other PPs said it isn't really something that you have control over.  It's your liver putting out the extra glucose into your blood while you are asleep.  That is something I am having to learn to repeat to myself because I hate my body for not doing what it was supposed to do and feel guilty every time I walk into the doctor office.  Don't fret too much about it.  Just talk to your doctor and try to work out things you can do.

  • I was having the same problem with  my fasting levels being higher.  The doctor put me on insulin at night and that has worked but now my post breakfast numbers are creeping up.  My dr told me the worst weeks for gd  are between 29 and 34 because of how fast the placenta is growing so fast. We will just adjust my meds as needed.  Hopefully they can get your numbers figured out!
  • I was diagnosed with GD at 24 weeks this time. I had it last time with my son too...my resting blood sugar is always the first number to creep up before everything else increases. I tend to have good numbers if I take a nice long walk post meals, but that isn't always realistic.

I have started insulin for bedtime and starting for dinner tonight and most likely all my other meals. I suppose I would rather have to be on insulin with good blood sugar numbers than have a big baby that results in a c-section.

Thank you all for your reply. So I visited my gynaec yesterday and she asked me to start with glyburide. I took it last night (though was not happy at all to start with any med  :( ) and my fasting number was 97 - same as yesterday's without med. Also my breakfast and lunch number creeped u a little than usual inspite of having similar food and activity. Does it take time to get adjusted to med and the numbers correct? If yes, how many days should I wait before contacting my gynaec? Also I don't know why but I kept on feeling low all day today, I know I shouldn't at this time but just couldn't help being emotional. Was feeling so sad and scared it will harm my baby  :(
  • I've been monitoring mine for 1 week now, and they have been high every day. 5 days of numbers of 105. Not cool. My post prandial numbers were hit and miss the first couple of days, but I have those under control now. I have to eat about half of the amount of carbs that the specialist told me to eat to get them there. :-( I see the diabetes specialist tomorrow....

Im sorry, I know how you feel. I've been feeling pretty low about it too. It's hard when it feels out of your control. I hope the medication starts working for you soon *hug*

  • I had GD with my first pregnancy and also ended up needing to take Glyburide at bedtime to help with my fasting sugar level even though my after meal readings were generally fine.  Did you doctor have you test your blood sugar in the middle of the night after starting the medication?  I was told to test at 2 or 3 am the first couple of nights and found that a full pill of Glyburide was actually too much for my body as it was sending my readings into the 60's, which is too low.  The doctor then had me cut the pills in half and that was still enough of a dose to get my fasting readings under control for the rest of my pregnancy (I delivered at 38w6d).  If you noticed a change with your after meal readings after starting the medication, it may be because of the dose making your levels crash overnight.  Just a thought...
And don't beat yourself up about needing to take medication for something that is out of your control (i.e., fasting blood sugar levels).  You are doing the best thing for your baby by taking care of yourself!

Thanks @bananna4 - did you readings fall into 60's middle of night or early morning. I took the meds for 2 days and my morning readings after 8 hours of fasting was 97 the first day and 94 the 2nd day but when I went back to sleep on 2nd day it went to 99 in like 10 hours of fasting. I had called the docs office to get an appointment to discuss and the nurse asked me the numbers. The doctor suggested to take 2 pills and come after 2 days. So I took 2 pills last night at 12:30 before going to bed and that time my reading was 99. At 4:30 when I woke up to use restroom I felt weakness and my body little cold. I checked my sugar and it was 69. I got freaked out and woke my DH. He immediately gave me cheese and bread and milk and we called the doctor. She has asked me to take 1 and half pill tonight and meet tomorrow but I guess I will just go with one pill or no pills at all. I am very freaked out that in 4 hours my reading went from 99 to 69. I am scared before I checked 69 if it was further lower and harmed my baby  :( also not sure the first 2 days when 8 hours reading were in 90's what were the middle night readings :( if what it was below 60 and I didn't know :(
  • @dmunoz81 - thanks dear. Good luck to you too! * hugs *
  • At 29 weeks(3 weeks ago) I took the glucose test with the sweet drink and my glucose level was 200 and my A1c was 7. My doctor the then had me monitor my blood for a week while I saw a dietician. During that week my daytime numbers were non-diabetic while my morning fasting was pre-diabetic and would not drop below 91. My doctor then placed me on Metformin 2X day at 850 mg and after about a week my morning numbers are 80s and 70s. I also try to walk on the treadmill at like .5 mph for 15 min and do weekly prenatal yoga.
