Crib has a smell to it

We got the crib and mattress yesterday. I was worried about the mattress smelling, so I took a good smell of it before buying; the one we decided on barely had any smell (definitely the best in the store for the ones we were considering).

I didn't think about the crib itself having a smell though. After my husband put it together and had it in the room, I walked in and noticed a smell. My husband claims he doesn't really smell anything, but I notice it and I'm worried that it's not going to go away or it will take a long time. We have the window in the room open and fans going to try to air it out. Has anyone had a similar experience?

The crib is Delta Bennington in white.

  • It's the paint/finish. It will go away in a day or two. It's normal for any furniture with a finish to smell weird. Our entire set smelled like paint, so i put dryer sheets in the drawers of the dresser and that helped a lot.

  • Our mattress had a smell for awhile, and it looks like it should aired out before using.

I'm airing the room out right now; windows open, fans on. I hope the smell goes away quickly. I'm so sensitive to smells and hate the idea of something in our house giving off a smell and breathing in that crap.

@sdLindenberg - is our furniture smell-free now? We (thankfully) don't have to buy a dresser right now, but I also hate the smell of dryer sheets, so I think that would make it worse for me! lol

@alylove11 - I knew mattresses were big smell offenders so I was so careful to pick one out that had only a very faint smell (it wouldn't have caused the entire room to stink). I didn't even think of the crib; I think it's kind of a new wood/paint smell. We don't buy new furniture often.

  • @Starlight32 yep! It's all stink free :)

  • @sdLindenberg - glad it no longer smells for you! Do you remember how many days it took for the smell to go away? Just curious. I'm unsure if I've noticed a difference yet with the windows/fans going for 12 hours.

  • A couple days I think. We had some beyond hot weather here, so we had the AC running and couldn't open the windows.

  • Sounds about right. It was a few days before the crib and mattress aired out and the smell was gone. Sounds really normal! I think the rug we bought was the worst and lasted the longest.
  • Well it's comforting to know this isn't just happening to our crib. Still playing the air out waiting game.
  • Well we are on day 5 of airing out and the smell doesn't seem to have improved. I'm thinking about returning it this weekend. Am I being too senstivie to the smell? I feel like there should be some improvement! Maybe I'm being unrealistic?
  • You have easily, at least another 10 weeks. I just opened the dresser Sunday to start pulling tags off her clothes and it still smells of paint. Air out the room more. You'll be fine. The fumes will go away by then.

  • I'm going to say you're being unrealistic and to wait.  It's possible that the smell is gone you've just convinced yourself its still there.  Especially if you're as sensitive to smells as you say you are.  Keep the windows opened when possible, run a fan if you want to, and it should go away in 10 weeks assuming you'er due the first week of June.
  • Yeah, I think make more of an effort to air out the room. It will go away before the baby gets here.
  • Thanks for all the replies. I seriously feel like a crazy person.
