Breathable mattress & co-sleepers

Hey all!  I am a STM, but I'm thinking this time around I would like to try a co-sleeper. It just makes so much more sense (especially if you're breastfeeding).  Maybe something that can be adjusted to actually sit on the bed next to me (like this: https://shop.nordstrom.com/s/halo-innovations-bassinest-bedside-swivel-sleeper-baby/3949465), or a basket/bassinet that can go in the bed between my husband and I?  Have any of you used these in the past? If so, what did you like or not like about the model you chose (or about the co-sleeper concept, generally)?

Also, has anyone used a breathable mattress or looked into whether or not they are worth the money? I was so terrified about SIDS after I had my daughter and I'm trying to minimize my fears this time around.

Any thoughts/suggestions are appreciated.  Thanks! :)

Re: Breathable mattress & co-sleepers

  • I too am interested in co-sleeping. I have read so many reviews on different co sleepers, and truthfully, most of them terrify me! I have looked into a crib that has a removable side, (it's the Gulliver from Ikea) My hubby read about several people removing that side, and pulling the crib next to the bed. I think this is the route we will go, since we need a new crib anyways, and I'm short, so I wanted a crib that was made for short momma's. I also will be buying a sleep positioner for this baby, like https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00VIBA74E?colid=31EQOYTTR305D&coliid=I2FL7C61GIEU5Q&redirect=true&ref_=br_it_dp_o_nS_ttl similar to one I had with DS2. That way, I won't have to worry about him rolling over and suffocating.

  • @ShanRum3  - I had not heard of sleep positioners. Thanks for the tips! :)

  • @bananers Hmmm interesting. I had never heard that. Thanks! I loved using it with my DS! It worked wonders for us. I would put him in a swaddler, and place him in there and he stayed put till I got him out of his crib to nurse.

We're getting a bassinet and putting a futon into the nursery for once we transition him to a crib. The potential risk of smooshing the little guy isn't worth it to me, but I do definitely want to keep him close for nursing. For us a bassinet within feet of the bed (and my husband is 6'4, with correspondingly long arms, and we're putting it on his side of the bed. He can reach, so a lot of the benefits of co sleeping!), or a bed within feet of the crib, but clearly his own space seemed to be a happy compromise.  Some women may be able to safely co-sleep, but I know I'm not one of them. I flail around, (sometimes even sleep walk) and sleep with a ton of blankets.

  • Thanks for all the pros/cons everyone! . I ended up falling asleep with my daughter A LOT while breastfeeding or falling asleep while holding her trying to get her to go to sleep, which I think is probably less safe than trying one of these co-sleepers. We'll see if it works.  And watch, the little guy may actually wind up hating it. That would be my luck ;)
  • I don't have any experience as a FTM, but I have several friends who set up their bed to co-sleep directly. I'm thinking of looking for an arm's reach co-sleeper on Craigslist but haven't decided entirely if that or a crib convert might work better.

  • @HeyStVincent I had every intention of DS2 sleeping in his crib, and not co sleeping like we did with DS1. But like you, I would fall asleep nursing him, and several times I felt my arm kind of drop, and it startled me awake. I was TERRIFIED I would eventually be feeding him and fall asleep and drop him. That is when we started cosleeping. Good luck in what ever route you choose!
  • I also am interested in a cosleeper for the side of the bed. I have coslept with both of my kids (they never even had a
crib set up for more than a week or two), but I don't think I can do it again! I'm just worried that the baby won't sleep in it at all! I've looked at the arms reach but I really can't tell how they are that different from a bassinet.

Have any STMs tried one of these? We have a king size bed so I think it would be big enough but thought about using one of these as a cheaper alternative to a bassinet.

  • @kcolly32 - the only thing I would be worried about with a basket with such short sides is that it would be more likely for a blanket in the bed to wind up over the baby.  Maybe something with the higher sides would be better?
  • For those of you looking for a co-sleeper just a heads up at buy buy baby they have a returned section. I ended up getting the halo bassinet for $130 when its normally $250 you just have to check up a the front of the store for the returns. Same with the mamaroo, I got mine for $150 and its normally $270. Nothing was wrong with either item and they are still covered under store and manufacturer warranty

  • I used a snuggle nest like the one @kcolly32 posted.we loved it he used it til he was able to push himself up and grab the side to stare at us and his lil legs were almost touching the bottom .i sold it but In the hunt for another one for this time.we have a arms reach cosleeper too.love it. He hated the rock n play but I got one for this girl to try so who knows what we will end up using, whatever helps baby n mom sleep because even tho daddy offers to get up for nighttime duty he sleeps like he's dead and by the Time i would wake him I could just have bottle or diaper done myself lol
