Babywise experienced moms

hello, I am a first time mom and I have been trying to follow babywise. My baby is 12 weeks old and we seem to not be moving along the babywise plan with merges.. He has not naturally done the first merge which typically occurs around 6 weeks.. And still wakes every 2 1/2 -3 hours to eat at night...I know each baby is different and those are average time frames but any suggestions? Im going back to work in a month and was really hoping id be Able to have a little lo her stetches of sleep even if it's with merge one. Thanks for your help!

  • I must add that he is a great eater!! And has been gaining a lot of weight from day one, we have a good eat, play, sleep schedule as well as a good nighttime routine.

  • IMHO babywise is not a good method whatsoever. If baby is waking every two hours to eat than its necessary.
If you research babywise you'll find that it's responsible for a great number of failure to thrive babies.
If your baby isn't following that plan then you shouldn't force it.
  •  I appreciate your input. Babywise always warns you to always! feed a baby if they are hungry it more than anything else provides a schedule for the baby and family... I will always feed when hungry and I use no cry solutions. I do believe there are gental, no cry, ways to structure your baby's day while always meeting baby's need.
  • I have several friends that swear by Babywise. I did a loosely based version of Babywise. I TRY to keep DS on an eat, play, sleep routine. He sleeps between 5-7 hours at night. I didn't follow the book exactly. Do you think he could be hungry in the middle of the night? When he wakes does he act really hungry?

We loosely implement a combo of Babywise and Secrets of the Baby Whisperer. Basically the eat/play/sleep routine. DD was an "angel baby" (Baby Whisperer) and happened to fall by the book with Babywise. She STTN starting at 9 weeks. We're doing the same with this LO except we haven't gotten a schedule quite down. We definitely follow the eat/play/sleep routine but each day is different.

As you know and I'm sure you follow, always feed baby when hungry. How are his daytime naps? I always make sure to wake LO from naps so she's eating every 3-3.5 hrs so she gets her calorie intake during the day.

  • Thanks for your response.. At times I do think he is hungry so I obviously feed him but other times I feel it's more him having a hard time staying asleep which I'm taking as also hunger.. During the day I always feed every 2 1/2 -3 and he doesn't always seem super hungry so not sure if he wants to go longer without eating or not. But I'm trying to keep it he eat, play sleep schedule.  He is a very big baby and gaining tons of weight! We still haven't been able to get him to fall asleep drowsy cause he is not a great napper... I really push to get him to nap for 1 hour minimum but sometimes all I can get is 40 minutes but he will typically "make up" for it at another nap. However naps are always a bit interupted waking once or twice. Should I try to just get him back to sleep at night if he is not showing signs of hunger? And unfortunately he is now braking out of his swaddleme so I'm gonna have to stop that ... Which will not help I'm sure ... Any suggestions are appreciated even if you think I'm doing it correctly and nothing needs to change..
  • I would try a new swaddle, the miracle blanket is better for a bigger baby. It's still normal for a baby to wake every three hours even at night. It's more of a developmental issue than a feeding issue, some babies are ready earlier than others. Your baby is just barely out of the newborn period, so I would continue what you are doing. Tbh I don't knwo what baby wise is, I'm just going by infant development.
  • I do babywise and it's good for me bc my style is very structured and I like schedules! Obviously u hafta be flexible though. With my twins (who are now 4yrs) I always felt like I was a month or two behind what babywise said they should be doing. But it eventually came! This baby is also not STTN as fast as babywise says but I'm consistent and think she will get there too. There's an excellent blog called Chronicles of a Babywise Mom that is so helpful troubleshooting issues! If u follow her on fb too there's a "hash it out" Monday where other babywise moms will help give advice to ur issues too!
  • DS is pretty big (at least 15lbs) and was breaking out of his SwaddleMe too. I bought the larger size and he seems to like that better. We now swaddle him with one arm in and one out and that is working out pretty well. Do you use a sound machine for sleep? That has worked great for us.

Thanks so much for that info.. I've joined the fb group already! And even if he is not STTN I do need as he does structure obviously with flexability! Very helpful!
  • Don't know much about Baby Wise but, breaking out of the swaddle might be what he needs. Once my DS got his hands out of the swaddle he was able to self soothe at night. I used to jump out of bed to soothe baby as soon as he started to move, then I decided to just listen and only get up if he is really crying. It is amazing to listen to DS wake up find his fingers or kick around a bit then settle himself back into a deep sleep. He now sleeps 12 hours at night and wakes up just once after the first 9 hours. This would be very different if I knew he needed to eat. In my case DS eats plenty during the day so I'm not worried about nourishment.
