Interesting daycare interaction

There is a daycare Center right by my work. Even though I have a rough plan, I thought I'd call them up for a quote. I only work 3 days a week with no plans to change that.
So, the director of this 'large daycare center' (as she describes it) tells me in her 30 years experience she has never ONCE heard of part time childcare. It's just unheard of, according to her.
I politely told her that every other 'large daycare facility' was happy to accommodate a 3 day schedule. Again, part time care is just unheard of for her...
Yet, she insisted I tour her facility, as I may change my mind. Really, lady? So... I'd rather pay YOU to watch my baby vs spending time with him myself? Not so much.
So weird.

Re: Interesting daycare interaction

  • wow that's strange. I send my daughter two half days- and that's totally normal and offered on a regular basis.
  • Loading the player...
  • That's just nuts.
i used to work for the YMCA, which id call a large childcare program, they allow as many days as you want AND drop in.
she is a nut job. Don't send your kid to that crazy lady.
  • This makes no sense! Every daycare I have looked at has had part-time options. Whats wrong with this lady!? If I were you, I would email her a link to a bunch of daycares that state they have part-time child care on their websites and tell her to get with the times!
  • I looked into a couple centers that didn't offer part time options. I can understand why. But several others did have part time options. I also need 3 days/week. To say it's unheard of is just ridiculous.
  • Right?!
It was a really strange. It would have made more sense to just say "our rates are for full time care". I totally understand if they just don't offer what I need- that's why people ask. Sheesh... 30 years of experience should have taught her that!
  • I've definitely heard of places not offering part time, but how does she not even know that exists? That sounds fishy. I wouldn't go look at that place. Plenty will be happy with your 3 day per week schedule.
  • Yeah...she is crazy. We do a 3 day schedule. Our "large daycare facility" offer, 5, 3, and 2 day options.

  • I'm kind of wondering if she thought I was a FTM and had no prior experience in shopping for daycares. I'm certainly NOT even considering this place!
  • I'm with some of the others, that one of the large center chains around here doesnt allow part time for infants. Or rather - they allow part time but you're still required to pay full time tuition. For them to say they've never heard of part time is just silly.

This is how ours works as well until they move out of the infant room. You can go part time if you want but you still pay the same to hold your spot full time. But they still offer part time... Kinda weird she would say that she's never heard of part time care.
  • My son goes 3 days with shorter hours in the summer, when we're off.  Any reputable center should have at least "heard of" a 3-day schedule, even if they don't offer it.  My brother and SIL did have a center they loved that only offered full-time, so when my SIL went to a part-time schedule they switched centers.  But even then, it wasn't "unheard of," they just didn't offer it.  Sounds to me like she's trying to reel you in and make some money.

  • That's ridiculous that she would say that!

My son used to go part-time (now he goes full-time) and we did have difficulty finding a place that was *quality and flexible with my constantly changing work schedule - some months I would need him to go every single day, some months, when I worked nights, he only needed 2 days.  Some places did have a policy that you had to specify exactly which days the child would attend for a month in advance and others charged full-time even if the child only attended 3 days.

  • Most of the daycare places in my area only offer full time for the under one year age group. It's not a problem since I work FT, and hopefully DH will be soon again as well.
