My LO has been "eating" purees for two months now (as per pediatrician - she has a milk issue so it was important that she started solids for extra nutrition). The problem is I can't get anything into her other than rice cereal. She HATES everything else. She'll gag, choke, and drool. I've tried different textures (soft, puree, crunchy, hard (in a mesh feeder)), and as soon as she realizes that the food has a flavour she clamps her mouth down and won't eat anymore. If I DO manage to get anything in her mouth she will gag etc. It's beyond a texture issue. I actually think she hates flavour. Heeeelllpppp
- she won't be 6 months until the 17th so I'm not comfortable with BLW yet.
Re: Baby hates flavour?!
I compare it to my past hatred of coffee ... I used to drink coffee with literally half creamer and milk so I would like the taste. Then over time I got used to it and now just have a splash of creamer and milk
I haven't had this issue (my little guy is obsessed over sweet potatoes and eats them like they're going out of style!), but maybe that would help? Good luck!
And don't give up! Keep trying different stuff and offering the same stuff again.
1. Make sure the food is very puréed and thin like Stage 1 baby food at the store. I make her food and use a food processor.
2. Offer very small spoonfuls. Our lo will gag on larger spoonfuls of stuff even if it's a food she likes.
3. After you give her a spoonful, use lots of praise and make a big fuss over her to help distract her. We have to do this for the first few bites of anything we give her other than cereal. I've also been telling her what the food is, so hopefully her memory will kick in and go "oh sweet potatoes, I love sweet potatoes!".
4. It does take 10-12 times before they develope a taste for a food so keep trying.
5. It is possible that she simply isn't ready yet for new flavors since she isn't 6 months yet. Both my pediatrician and chiropractor say food before one is just for fun.
6. Also let her mouth a little of what you are eating if it is solid so she can't choke on it and fruits and veggies. Ie: if I'm eating an apple ( Fuji since they are super mild apples) or carrot I will let her lick, or suck on it to start to get a taste for new flavors that way since she is very interested in trying things that go in my mouth.
