Teething Tablets

I've heard a lot of bad stuff about teething tablets, but I'm not sure if all of that information is old and outdated or still relevant. I looked up the Hyland's teething tablets and saw that the belladonna in them is what's bad, but what about baby Orajel Naturals? Has anyone tried them or heard anything about them? LO is crying 24/7 and I feel terrible that nothing is working for him, but I don't want to give him anything that's going to hurt him.

Re: Teething Tablets

  •  Do you use Tylenol? Is LO 6 months yet so you can use Motrin?

  • I've tried tylenol, it never seems to help him.  I haven't tried Motrin though.  He won't take anything to chew on and the amber teething necklace was a bust too.
  • I tried teething tablets with my DS and it seemed to make things worse. Not sure why. A lot of mom's swear by them. I never used orajel because I was afraid of choking if he swallowed any of it. Have you tried baby wearing? That always calms my LO down when he's having a rough day. I wear him in my ergo and take a walk outside and he falls asleep
  • I didn't use teething tablets with DD1 because of concerns about the belladonna. Orajel is a hazard because it numbs anywhere it touches, making it a choking hazard if they aren't able to properly swallow their saliva. She wore an amber necklace for a year, but I took it off because I felt the science just wasn't there.

Our hits were frozen damp baby wash cloths, Sophie, and snuggles. Once older, Motrin. It worked way better than tylenol on teething pain.

  • My sister who's a pediatric nurse told me her practice recommends rubbing baby benadryl on their gums along with tylenol or motrin, and not to use orajel or tablets because of the choking hazard when it numbs their throat. Ran it by my ped and he said it's what they recommend now too
  • Oh, I had no idea that they would numb like that.  Well, guess I'm buying some motrin.   :s This is why I ask you guys!
  • The Orajel naturals does not have benzocaine in it so no, it does not cause numbing. Other types of Orajel contains the benzocaine which would cause numbing, but not the Orajel naturals. I did try the naturals on my baby girl and honestly haven't noticed a difference (only when I'm rubbing it on she's happy), but goes right back to crying when I stop. Tylenol doesn't make a difference for her either.. There are hylands teething tablets without belladonna too that I may try- the ones that were causing problems had belladonna in it which are dangerous at certain levels.
  • @natabear Just make sure the Motrin is okay.  I think most pediatricians (ours included) require LO be at least 6 months old for the Motrin.  I agree with PPs that it is much more effective for dealing with teething pain and lasts longer as well.

Apart from the numbing, Orajel is also not recommended because of a rare condition called Methemoglobinemia due to the benzocaine.  It is rare but most common in children under 2 and can be serious and potentially fatal.  It results in the oxygen in the bloodstream being greatly reduced.  As PP stated their naturals line doesn't include this ingredient.

I think Belladonna is fine in smaller doses but Hylands manufacturing process wasn't controlling the dosage properly and some tablets had a much higher concentration than others which led to the problems. The website says that the process was changed and the issues were addressed and dealt with.  TBH we just stick with Sophie and Motrin, some days and some teeth suck worse than others but they seem to do the trick.
  • I used Camilia drops with DS and it was the only thing that worked for him. I haven't needed anything for this LO yet but I plan to use it again with her.

@ElleMF728 That's awful.  The orajel naturals are benzocaine free though, I had heard that it was bad.
  • We use Camilia as well. and her Sophie. Just watch them if they have a Sophie. Reports of Sophie's front leg getting lodged in baby's airway. I used to give it to her when she was in her car seat/driving, but now i won't. We also have used Tylenol once when she was just totally inconsolable and that helped. Going to make frozen breast milk pops also.
  • We put frozen fruit in the nuby mesh and let her chew.  It worked for my others too.
