TTC After a Loss

Period after methotrexate shots

Hi
So I had 2 methotrexate shots on Saturday November 14th, 2015 and its now March 4 2016 and I still haven't gotten my period.. I've taken multiple tests and they all say negative.. And I've called my doctor and they don't seem worried but I kind of am. I mean it's been almost 4 months.. Everywhere else I've read everyone seems to get theirs around 8 weeks after the shots.., has anyone else had this? Should I be worried? Is there anything I can do to help start it?
Thanks

While I have not been in your situation, I'm with you in that, that seems like a long time to me. I actually miscarried a few days before you you, unassisted at home, and have had monthly cycles since that time. Obviously two different situations, but still.

You could try some Raspberry leaf tea from the natural foods/medicine store. It is used to tone the uterus and some women take it to induce labor as it causes little "contractions". When I've used it in the past, I ended up with a shorter luteal phase/earlier period. Have you also thought about acupuncture? That might also be an alternative, my acupuncturist told me that many women who are going through menopause will have a period within days after starting acupuncture even if they haven't had one in over a year or months. Good luck and sorry for your loss.

  • I don't think I will be too much help, but my sister just had, what I believe were methotrexate shots, but I could be wrong. She had already bled quite a bit before the shots but the bleeding had stopped and her levels were not going down, but ultrasounds confirmed that the sac was not in the uterus so the pregnancy was confirmed as not-viable. She was given the shot and her levels still didn't go down so she was given a second shot and she finally started bleeding again and her numbers are starting to go down a little faster. She is going in again for more blood tests tomorrow to make sure they continue to go down, but it seems as if her shots worked much faster than yours are. This is was all within a few weeks for her.

Although she/he doesn't seem worried, would ask your Dr. exactly what she/he thinks is going on. Maybe it is a different type of shot that works slower or maybe there are other options she/he can discuss with you. Sorry that i'm not super helpful. Best of luck and FX for a quick resolution.

  • I got methotrexate for an ectopic pregnancy and had bleeding on and off for several weeks (maybe 3?) and then bleeding similar to a period started about a month after the shot.  Since then I have had normal cycles.  Is your doctor an OB/GYN or a PCP?  Generally people on these boards say if you don't get your period in 60 days at any point and have a negative pregnancy test you should call your doctor and ask if they can give you medication to jumpstart your period.  I'm sorry your doctor hasn't been helpful - is there someone else you can call?
  • Thanks for all the responses everyone!
My bleeding after the shots stopped about 3 weeks after and since I have had nothing..
And I talked with an obgyn..thinking if I still don't get it in a few weeks I will reach out again..
Thinking I'm either getting it soon or may be pregnant again.. I've been really moody and my boobs are really sore... I had this last July when I was pregnant then miscarried .. So I'm not sure what's going on

I'm very sorry about your loss, but this isn't the place to try to get internet strangers to comment on whether or not you may be pregnant. If you think you may be, pee on a stick and you will know for sure. A negative means you're not pregnant at that time. It's most likely that your body is still trying to hormonally recover, I know that it takes quiet some time, and I know how hard it is. I think you're going in the right direction with your doctor, and I really hope they get you started on the road to recovery soon!
