Anyone here (STMs+) have/ had a mature placenta?

I've searched and found a few previous posts on other boards discussing this, but I thought I would check here too.

I just had a 34 week appointment yesterday and my OB did an US to check growth (I am at risk for pre-e: had it with my first and have been treated for high BP since day 1 with this baby).  Baby is measuring right on track, TONS of movement, my BP was 122/78, virtually no swelling, fluids were within the normal range (9cm, so the lower end).  The estimated weight (which I know can be off) was higher at 5lb 10oz (my first was 7lb 10oz born via induction at 38.5 weeks) BUT she also mentioned that my placenta was starting to mature.

Since the weight is measuring higher, maturing placenta, high BP, and my history, we are doing NST's twice a week from now until baby is born (nothing new for me ... did these twice a week + 1 US a week at this point with my first as well).

Dr Google has of course provided information on what the mature placenta means, but she didn't give me a grade so I don't really know where I am yet.

Anyone else have this?  What was your experience?  What information can you share with me?

TIA!

  • My guess is they will move to deliver you if/when your placenta shows signs of tuckering out. I'm also doing NSTs twice a week (for the 3rd time around). Consider preparing for an early delivery (pack bags now, get things done at home, etc.) just in case. I've not had to do this but I understood it was a real possibility each time.

  • Thanks.  I was induced at 38w3d with my first, and am / was REALLY hoping to not have to be induced this time.  (Obviously, there is no choice when it comes to what is best for baby and me.)  Wrapping everything up early / ahead of time is good advice.  Luckily, I don't have much to do, just a few things at work.
  • DDs IUGR was due low nutrition to "failing placenta" which may or may not be the same thing. I was scheduled for induction at 39 weeks and she came on her own at 38w5. I agree with wrapping things up early to be prepared and keeping up with the NSTs but I wouldn't worry too much about induction yet. It may happen, but my (totally anecdotal and un-researched) opinion is that babies who aren't getting what they need, often decide to come early by themselves.
