"Fake crying" at this age?

DD was sitting in her swing while I was doing the dishes and she was ooing and ahhing until my husband walks by and she watched him, and started what we call her "fake" cry. When he picked her up she was laughing though! She sticks out her bottom lip and makes a "mneh-eh-eh" cry! It's really slow and i think is so sadly cute and funny, but can she be doing this for attention this early in age? She is 11 weeks btw.

I wasn't sure if babies this young were aware that if they "cry" they get attention and cuddles. Does anyone's baby do this too??

I can tell when my LO is crying crying or just kind of fussing just to fuss. It's not desperate and usually wants me to come over to him but it's not needy if that makes sense. I'll go over and he will smile really fast. Or when I'm changing him and he is annoyed he will lightly fuss then sigh like "ugh". It's so funny. And he is 9 weeks. They def know how to get our attention but there is a difference in their cries for sure. I think some times he likes to hear his voice too.

My LO is 13 1/2 weeks and has been doing fake cries for a while. She does a very faint 'wah' a couple of times in a row then is quiet. So now whenever she does it I always say "no wahs please!" back to her. I know it's fake because she is never actually distressed or cries for real after she does the fake cries. It cracks me up every time though. I'm guessing she does it when she's fussy or bored. Or wanting all my attention the 1% of the time I'm not already giving it to her.

Babies this young don't understand the concept of "manipulation" - "if I do this fake cry they pick me up" but they do associate mom and dad with comfort and so if they are bored or want some comfort they may let out an unconvincing cry. DD definitely has the most pathetic fake cry, but I will comfort her when I hear it.

Edited to delete "she doesn't do it in her sleep" - it was 2 am and I was tired. No idea where I go was going with that thought train.

Agree w/ @Court11152325 dd has a cry she uses exclusively for when her brother is bothering her. It stops the second he leaves her alone. I think the different cries just mean different things- not "fake" per say just communicating different things - "oh hey dad! I'm over here just chillin' if you want to come say hiiiii"

My DS has a fake cry for sure. It means "talk to me" or "pay attention to me" and it's just a quick wahh that stops when I start talking to him. He'll smile then and I'll call him out for it. I think it's hilarious.

DD definitely has a fake cry and it's really obvious. Just seems like a really long, low toned cry. It's kind of weird, but noticable for sure

My girl does this for sure. She also has a sleep cry that is hilarious. I will hear it and go to check on her, and sure enough she is still sleeping. It somehow sounds different in her dreams.

It isn't fake crying. Interaction and socialization is as real a need for babies as hunger. Crying is how they communicate their needs. You talk to your baby or pick him/her up, and you are meeting that need.

DD has the cutest personality. She fake cries and then laughs or smiles and it melts my heart lol! One night her dad was kissing her and she would pout and cry. Once he stopped she was smiling from ear to ear. I'm sure it annoyed the heck out of her which is why she was crying.

I wanna say last week my LO has started having a cry like that. Kinda started associating it that she is tired or just wants attention. It's also how she wakes me up every morning now lol. Not a distressing one just like hey mom I'm up and want to make you smile, oh and changing me would be a plus too lol.

I think the term 'fake' isn't being used by myself (and others too) properly. I definitely know when she does her 'other' sounds that she is trying to get my attention as it is a much different sound than a sleepy or hungry cry. I probably should have included that I do pick her up or go interact with her as I'm saying the 'no wahs please'. Don't want ppl thinking I'm a deadbeat mom! I always say that as more of a joke than anything because it's not even a real cry but one or 2 'wahs', and like other peoples babies she is also is usually happy after I go to her.

DD's attention getter is more of a coo that sounds like it could be close to a fuss, but not quite. And then as soon as you go to her she smiles.

Henry has all sorts of communication noises he uses to get our attention. None of it is fake because it is a legitimate need of his and he is too young to manipulate.
They are some pretty cute little sounds, though. Especially when he is yells at the dog for putting his cold nose on his feet. Always surprises him. Lol.

My son has has "yelling", which is his...not upset yet but wanting attention noise. It cracks me up because it's just like, aaah! Aaaah.
