need help with a boy name

I am a firm believer that a baby won't come until their name is picked.  I am nearing my due date (3/20) of my second child.  My husband and I did not find out what we were having with either this baby or our first.  With our first we had a boy and named him John Christopher III but he goes by Cash (neither John I or John II go by John). We picked out a girl name while pregnant with him and we both are still in love with our girl name but we cannot agree on a boy name.  We don't (or I don't) want a popular name-my name is Ashley which was the number 2 name of the year I was born and several years before and after that and hated having a ton of Ashley's in my classes.I have looked all over, read different name boards on here, books, websites, ect for a name but nothing has popped.  We are also trying to not repeat names of living relatives on either side of our families.  I have 22 first cousins about 25 second cousins and my husband has about 35 first cousins and just as many second cousins.   We have a couple names we like:
Easton (worried its becoming too popular)
Gage
Parker
Aspen
Garth
Kellogg (its my husband's grandpa's middle name but my husband is worried about him being called Kelly)

We have no middle name picked either. I'd like to use my maiden name (Neumann) as the middle name but I'm not sure if my husband is on board with that.  Our last name is Dates.
Any suggestions are greatly appreciated!!! Thank you so much!!

Re: need help with a boy name

  • I would... strongly oppose Kellogg, on cereal grounds.

Almost all of those names sound really fussy to me but my kid's going to be a Samuel so my taste is definitely geared towards more classic names. Easton and Aspen just sound like prep school fodder and while I know and love a Parker it is definitely getting very popular.

    Garth is lovely!

  • Out of these choices I like Easton the best. I think it's the only one that really flows with your last name.
  • Aspen. Easton is too popular. My cousin named her baby cedar last year.
  • I love Parker, and it's not too common. If you don't want a common name, I suggest you steer clear of Gage. That was the name we were going to choose if LO turned out to be a boy. I know of several young boys with that, and it's just getting more and more popular. Hell, there was drama in my family because both myself and my cousin's wife were pregnant and both chose Gage (though she spelled it Gauge) as boy names.

My two favorites out of your list would be Easton and Parker. DS1 is Easton and we love it but I agree it's becoming more popular. When we named him that four years ago you barely heard it. I don't think it's too popular since it is still only in the 80's on the top 100 list. My second favorite would be Parker. I like the "older" names that are coming back.

Kellogg I only think of the cereal and Garth just makes me think of Garth brooks..LOL.

Parker is common here where I live amongst the late 20 somethings... I like it a lottttt
  • Thank you all for the help. I think we've ruled out Easton, gage and Parker but have added more. I know a name will just pop and be it. Just have to find it.
  • none of these are my style at all, so i feel like i can't give good input there, but baby will come, name or not. this is our fourth time not finding out the sex, and only the first baby had a for sure name picked out (one for each sex). third baby didn't have a name until he was 3 days old! ;)

  • Out of those Aspen and Easton. Only ones that flow with your name. Aspen is probably a little more unique.
