Will my baby ever nap?

i know there's been lots of discussion about naps, but I'm desperate for help!

8w weeks today, and super struggling on the nap front which then leads to an overtired baby in the evening. I'm trying to get her to nap in her crib since that's the only quiet room in the house (hubby always on phone for work, dogs, traffic etc), and I want to transition her from bassinet soon. She wakes up every time within 5 mins if not the moment she hits the crib. Then we start all over again. :( I've tried swaddling, white noise, rolled blankets under sheet - everything and nothing works! She'll only sleep on me or wrap, or in swing, but even swing is disrupted due to noise. Help me!!! How can I get her to sleep in there - she's not getting nearly enough daytime sleep :( she sleeps OK at night (4 hour stretch then 3,2 she's EBF) but I know she may sleep better if she can get sleep during the day. I'm worried for her health :(

Maybe move her swing to her room first and get some good naps in there and then once she's used to napping in there try to transition? My DD doesn't do awesome at daytime sleeping but she's 9 weeks today and getting better. I'm still on the "whatever works" train so I say do what you gotta do. Of course swaddling, white noise are all Better with my LO anyway. It is so frustrating and I hope things get better for you!

eta - we sleep in the car, in the kinderpack, and occasionally will daytime nap in auto RNP which is what I strive for. She did sleep in her bouncer for an hour today which was a win for us!

  • I agree with the comment above ... My 11 wk old is not a great napper but I am on a whatever works stage as well... I have stopped trying to put him in the crib for naps and just use the swing.. That way he can sleep well during the day and hopefully sleep better at night which is my first goal... Ever since I'm only using the swing he will sleep typically 1 hour to 1 1/2 hour naps sometimes longer sometimes shorter... If he wakes early typically around after 20 minutes (im guessing sleep cycle) I try to pat him back to sleep or pick him up and put him back to sleep.. I do spend a lot of time fighting to get a good nap in but it is getting better I think... I may have one 45 minute nap a day but I figure that's decent as long as the others are good.. But I am postponing naps in crib at this point... Hope this helps
  • I have my girl nap in the moba (boba) wrap if I am doing chores around the house. Or she naps in the car seat/stroller if we are out. They will eventually sleep on their own when they get a bit older ;) I dont over worry.
  • Same here at 9.5 weeks. Seems worse since about 7.5 weeks to now which corresponds with the wonder weeks for her (may be a load of crap but who knows). Tried crib napping today and got a 30 min nap, a 40 min nap, and a 30 min nap which is huge for her.

It it sounds totally hippyish but I try to think calm thoughts and like get myself in a calm mindset when I'm trying to get her to nap

if your LO is generally happy and alert then try not to stress. (I need to tell myself this!)
  • LO is 10 weeks and a few days. Until recently naps were solely in the swing. We've been transitioning to the crib and some days are better than others. Two days ago he was a dream baby and dropped right off in his crib but yesterday he was inconsolable and only wanted to be held or put in the swing. I've found that consistency is the key to getting small improvements. At least try to get them to settle in the crib. It might not always work but give it a good 10-20 mins of trying depending on your LO before going to the "anything to nap" approach. At this age we don't want them too over tired! As napping has improved our LO also has suddenly been sleeping better at night so that's encouraged me to be strong and persistent during the day for the naps.
  • We moved our baby's swing into his room, put up blackout curtains and use really loud white noise. Whatever works.

@millieb14 I not only try the calming thoughts thing too when trying to get my son to nap but I've also got this crazy idea that if I look sleepy than it will make him sleepy haha so as he's staring at me while I rock him I pretend to get sleepy and close my eyes...maybe it's working but most likely I'm just desperate and crazy

Lol I do this too when my LO wakes up early from a nap, which she always does, I close my eyes in hopes she will go back to sleep
  • I put a worn t shirt of mine under the crib sheet with rolled up receiving blankets. DS took a 3 hour nap in his crib for the first time after I did that.

My LO is now 11 weeks old and I've only just started to get him on a regular day time nap schedule. For the past week he's been napping for an hour and a half in the morning and three hours in the afternoon, and another hour between 7-9ish pm, with small "catnaps" of 15-20 min inbetween. Also, I almost always drive somewhere during the day and he sleeps then. You may have tried this but this is what I do:

First, don't try to nap him when he's fussy. I find its way easier to get him to sleep longer if he's already asleep when I put him down. Then, I have his bassinet or playpen in a dark, cool room and I swaddle him nice and tight. I put white noise on (sometimes) and I feed him a good feed. So make sure he's hungry. It helps if you feed him right next to where you will put him down, and make the environment ready for him, so transitioning him over is very simple. If he doesn't fall asleep while feeding, I'll walk around for a bit in the dark room. He has ALWAYS fallen asleep for me at this point. Then I put him down, I walk away and close the door. I use a baby monitor.

It might be that your LO is just not loving the crib at this point. What does he normally sleep in at night?

I really hope this works for you!!!
