Any of your LO's ever have C-Diff??

please tell me if your LO has had c-diff before and how you found out they had it and got rid of it. We did antibiotics, but I think it's back w/ a vengeance. She doesn't want to nurse or take a bottle, watery diarrhea-like poo, seems to have major tummy cramping and pain. I'm giving Tylenol round the clock so not sure if she has fever. Will this stuff ever go away!?

Re: Any of your LO's ever have C-Diff??

  • I've never seen it in a child because I've only had experience with adult patients with it (I'm an RN). But I will say it's very hard to get rid of. I would take her back to the pediatrician. Adults can get dehydrated very quickly with it, so obviously babies can get much worse! I don't know if they gave you any education materials about it, but CDIFF is very contagious and the germs are hard to kill. Definitely practice good hand washing techniques. I typically don't clean with harsh chemicals, but with CDIFF you really need to clean with a bleach dilution because those germs last a lot longer on surfaces than other germs. Good luck! It's hard enough on adults, I can't imagine a baby with it!

  • I would definitely go back to the pediatrician asap. C diff is very difficult to get rid of and recurs frequently  (also an RN)

I'm so sorry your LO is dealing with this :(
  • I just ran a poo sample in, now waiting to hear the results. This is positively miserable. They didn't give us ANY information on how to prevent it coming back - I researched online and it sounds like I need to scrub everything with a bleach solution. Other than antibiotics and good hand washing and cleaning, is there anything else we can do or try??
  • I don't know if your LO is old enough or would like yogurt, but it could be helpful! Ask your pediatrician when you get your results back to be sure. Some people say it doesn't make a difference, but other people say it really helps settle the stomach. Yogurt has natural probiotics and it kinda helps "neutralize" the gut, for lack of a better term. I know every time I've been on antibiotics in general, they tear my stomach up. So I usually make myself choke down a yogurt (I can't stand it) every day while I'm on them and it really does help me not get diarrhea associated with antibiotics. Definitely talk to your pediatrician first though!
  • I'm so sorry you're going through this. If you have a steam sterilizer I'd do everything. Maybe even run LOs clothes and blankets on a sanitize setting in the dryer or wash them hot!
  • You can just give childrens probiotics no reason to give yogurt.
  • Bleach the whole house? C diff lasts a long time on surfaces... Up to 5 months on a hard surface in the right conditions. I'm a RN too, and I always changed at work and disinfected my shoes each shift if we had a case-take no chances haha. If you use a disinfecting product like Lysol wipes-follow the instructions (many say the surface has to remain wet for 5 min to be effective). Also sanitize the washing machine after you wash any clothes that may have had poop touch them.

  • The C-diff is back and I'm terrified that we won't get rid of it. Thank you guys for all your suggestions - I plan to clean sanitize bleach every damn thing in this house. Any other suggestions are more than welcome!!! Thank you!!!
  • Poor thing! I hate that for the both of you! Just clean like a crazy person and pray it goes away soon! Those germs last a long time on surfaces. The pp are right, I think in our hospital when you're cleaning the surface needs to stay wet for 3-5 minutes in order to kill the bacteria. Good luck and keep us updated!
