Getting tdap next week!

I'm suppose to get the tdap next week! I'm a bit nervous but definitely want it. Has anyone else gotten theirs yet?

Re: Getting tdap next week!

  • Not yet :) my office doesn't do it until the third tri.

Its not bad! Make sure to move your arm a lot to avoid from getting all stiff and sore.

I get mine at 28 weeks. So about 3 weeks from now. My arm was a little sore the last time I got it but it wasn't too bad. Honestly the cervical cancer shot I got hurt worse, lol.
  • I'll be between 27 and 28 weeks next week when I get it. Is that too soon?
  • No, that's the beginning of your 3rd trimester so that's perfect timing!

  • I think around 28 weeks is pretty standard.

The Rhogam shot is honestly the most brutal I've ever had. Wayyyyyy worse than tetanus.
  • I haven't had mine yet but I'm not due until the end of June so I'm always later than most here.  Hope your arm doesn't get too sore.  I'll also second that the gardasil vaccine, particularly the third one in the series, was way worse than my last dtap booster (I got them at the same time in opposite arms so I could actually compare quite well).
  • I haven't had mine for this pregnancy yet (not sure if it needs updated or not) but it wasn't bad when I had it with my son. It left a weird red splotch for a while but I don't think that's common.

  • Last time I had to ask my office at like 35 weeks if I was supposed to get it. They said yes and gave it to me. Is that unusual?!
  • I haven't had mine yet, but I'm just coming up on 24 weeks. At my appointment on Tuesday, I'll ask about it. I kind of hope it's not the one after (28 week) because I have to get an ultrasound, and do the GD test too. I don't need a shot on top of that.

  • I just did the gd test. I don't know my results but the test was painless. I'm much more nervous about the shot and now I'm wondering if 27 is too early!
  • I got it two years ago with DS, it was nothing! I'm gonna ask to get mine when I go in a week.

They boost you so baby gets antibodies in the womb. Normally, I think you only get one every 10 years.
  • I'll get it at 28 weeks.  It wasn't a problem last time.

They recommend it for every pregnancy.  It's for the baby more than for you.  They get some of the antibodies that way.  Other people who will be around baby a lot should have had one in the last 10 years.

  • I got mine after I delivered with my first one, I think I was still in the hospital. I will ask my OB at my next appointment about getting it before delivery.

  • I've had one with each of my pregnancies. This will be my third TDaP in 4 years. It makes my arm sore for a few days, but moving it helps a lot.

I'm sorry!!!! I think it's the fact that they have to inject it really slowly that makes it bad. You got this, girl!!

Normally shots and needles don't bother me the least bit, but you are making me seriously nervous about it.

I'm in the same boat. Needles don't bother me at all. I'll stop talking about it :) I really am
    sorry I'm freaking you out!!
  • Rhogam wasn't terrible but the location was uncomfortable. Tdap I got at the same time as my flu shot with DS so both arms were sore and I couldn't lay on either side to sleep at night for two days. Had it been just the tdap I don't think I would look back on it with so much hate.

  • My ob hasn't mentioned it yet (I'm 24 weeks) but I do know it's suppose to be 3rd trimester so I'll say something at our next appointment. My niece was just born 3 months ago so I really want to get it for her benefit as well.

    I forgive you.

@MDKC14 where do they give the rhogam shot?

  • @dennyandlee- thank you :) it's typically given in your upper butt cheek, but you can get it in your arm. Go for the butt.
  • DEFINITELY GO FOR THE BUTT!

    giggity.
  • I got my rhogam in my arm last time and didn't think it was bad at all.....

  • Thanks for all the replies!
  • I also think it helps if you get it in your dominate arm, since you're more likely to use that arm throughout the day. I'm extremely lefty dominate and when I got the tdap at 17 they did it in my right and it was so uncomfortable for days.  When I got it 3 years ago again, they put it in my left arm, I went to work and hardly noticed it since I was using it so much at work.

Thanks for the tip! I'm going to get it in my right arm (dominate arm). I have been trying to sleep on my left side so this should also be good with sleeping since some people have said they had soreness while laying on the arm with the shot.
  • I'm getting nervous about it; shot is tomorrow. I haven't had a shot in a long time. Of course, it's all worth it for baby :)
  • I got mine today - NBD at all. Don't stress!
  • Thanks! The shot itself didn't hurt but my arm is sore now. Nothing alarming though
