Watery Eyes

Anyone have experience with their LO getting watery/goopy eyes yet? When I got DS up this morning his left eye was all gunked up & watery. I cleaned it off with a warm wash cloth but it's still watering now. Did a quick Google search and they said it's completely normal because babies tear ducts are still forming. Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this yet, and if so, how long did it last for you?

Re: Watery Eyes

  • Yup. DS has had them since birth, the eye drops help but when you stop using them they just come back. Cotton balls and cooled down boiled water is what I use
Hoping it clears soon though he doesn't seem to mind haha

  • Mine little guy has had one eye like this since birth. I have heard breastmilk helps. I have tried but no luck. We just keep it cleaned as best as possible. The pediatrician says it should go away by the time he about a year old.
  • Have noticed it with DD but just gently clean around her eyes with warm water and a clean wash cloth.

With DS I remember he had a clogged tear duct around 14 weeks. The doctor talked like this is pretty common but he woke up from a nap with one eye swollen shut so we'd rushed him to the walk in clinic. We did massage and warm compresses and it cleared pretty quickly but was scary. He still gets some eye crust and gunk but the worst passed by at least 6 months I'd say.
  • My LO now 13 weeks old had the same issue.  Took him to dr and they game me ointment for his eye which helps and said it is probably a clogged tearduct it comes and goes and when it flares up I use the ointment and warm cloth over eye dr said it is very common up until 6 months of it continues after that they usually refer to an ophthalmologist to have the tear duct opened so it can drain properly
  • LO had clogged tear ducts in both eyes for almost a week. I kept cleaning them and it went away on its own. Completely normal.
  • Leo has a immure tear duct too. His eye leaks and can get crusty. We just clean it often. Our dr didn't give us anything for it. He said it is super common and can last 9 months to a year.

  • We had a blocked tear duct at birth which went away after I sprayed some breast milk in her eye a few times.

Us too- breastmilk plus warm compresses & I massaged the duct & got a lot of yuck out. Strangely satisfying. It went away after a couple weeks of me being crazy about it but most likely she outgrew it & it had nothing to do with my efforts.
  • @blended10 how did you massage the duct?!

  • At the corner of her eye (near her nose) it would get puffy & I would just gently push my finger in a circle & stuff would come out. It was gross & also very satisfying to get that crap out!
  • Yep my babe has had 1 clogged duct since birth. At one point around 2 w It got really bad with gunk and they gave me an ointment to use for 5 days and it cleared the green infection stuff, but it still waters all the time to this day. It's normal. Keep clean with warm compress and massage. Some say breast milk helps too, but did t in our case
  • DD has a clogged tear duct too. It comes and goes. I clean it with a warm wash cloth and massage the corner of her eye. Last Saturday it got really red and super crusty for the first time so the pedi prescribed some ointment for when it flares up.

DS had the same thing and it went away after a few months.
