Bottles???

I'm getting ready to go back to work next week after a wonderful 16 week maternity leave. We started giving EBF LO a bottle (Tommee Tippee) once a week when she was 4 weeks old so she would be somewhat use to them. We didn't give her one for about 2 weeks after Christmas. Now she is refusing all bottles. If the Tommee Tippee is anywhere in sight she will have a complete meltdown. She will drink maybe an ounce from the Playtex drop-in bottle. I went to the store the other day and bought one of every bottle they carried. My question is what bottles have you guys had success with?

Re: Bottles???

  • We use a brand called Joovy. We won a starter set at a Babies R Us breastfeeding class and used it because it was the only bottles we had a 0 flow nipple for. I really like the bottles though because they're easy to clean (we have 2- a 5 oz and an 8 oz that came with the set).

You can try different positions to give your LO a bottle (like holding, putting in a swing or bouncer, holding like being nursed, etc.). Or you can try being out of the house and having someone else give her the bottle. There have been a few different discussions on how to get LO to take a bottle if you use the search function

We haven't tried the Joovy yet. I'll have to look into those. My husband and mother have tried every position imaginable with no luck. I also leave the house or take her to my mom's when they are trying to give her a bottle. I did use the search function and nothing came up on this topic
  • I use Mam bottles, mostly because we got a free one and she seemed to like it so I got few more. They are super easy to clean, which is my favorite part. We started with one bottle every day or every other day fed by my husband when she was about 2 weeks old. Now I can feed her too and she seems to have no problem going back and forth between breast and bottle. Sorry you're having so much trouble, hope it works out!
  • We use Avent Natural. LO was refusing formula for awhile, but would take breast milk from a bottle. We finally figured out it was a temperature thing. Whenever she had eaten breast milk from a bottle it had just so happened to be "freshly squeezed". We have to warm the bottle AND nipple to basically skin temperature. Maybe try that since it sounds like you've tried everything else?
  • We also just realized Zeke may have been choking on the 1 flow nipples and we went back to the 0 flow since he's only been taking the bottle from me (which totally defeats the purpose of the bottle!)... He still only took this last bottle from me but now that he isn't gagging maybe he'll take it from someone else.
  • Maybe try avent. After my LO tried that one she now has the meltdown when I pull my boob out. Lol. So apparently she likes that bottle better.

Mine prefers Avent to the boob as well!

We use Avent Natural and our LO loves them.
LO refused my boob at 6 weeks and will only drink from the bottle.  He freaks out when I tried to get him to latch.
We got the bottles from Babies R Us when they were having the "buy one get one 50% off."

    Edit to add more.
  • The playtex nipple is the only one DD likes. I also found that they are interchangeable with any playtex bottle so I can get rid of the drop ins! I hated the thought of having to use those going forward.
  • Thanks everyone!!!! Going to try these ideas today
  • So we used Tommee Tippee, but LO started hating them days before I went back to work. Turns out he only wants to take a bottle of its pipping hot. DH has to boil water and warm it in that. That's another thing you could play around with.
  • Dr browns, we did one bottle a week starting at week 6, and we skipped a few here and there. She still takes it though, even if I am the one giving it or if I am in the room.

    Good luck !
  • EBF when when im home and bottle feeding with Avent natural while im at work. We've noticed shes reluctant to eat sometimes and will just play with the nipple on the bottle. But when shes hungry she will down her 3-4 oz.
  • FYI I now hate Avent...not that it's their fault she won't breatsfeed but at least I can blame someone!!!
  • My guy likes MAM and Nuk bottles.
  • We've always used dr Browns. And babies r us does free ones sometimes with the coupon if you spend $15 you get a bottle. We've gotten two free Halloween ones and a free valentines one.

Does anyone have the mimijumi bottle? Thoughts?
Lo wont take latch munchkin or mam bottles... He would only get 2 bottles a week while I'm at class. He gets so miserable when I'm gone because he gets hungry and dad gets frustrated :( he also won't take a paci or anything in his mouth besides boob or his hand
edited because it posted too soon
  • My pump came with bottles (Ameda brand) but the nipples we use are Dr. Brown brand. He eats better from a bottle if I'm not the one giving it to him.
  • Maybe it's that the nipple isn't slow enough? I've found that Playtex slow flow nipples are a lot slower than Medela slow flow nipples.
  • We love Avent naturals - we use glass and the newborn /premie
nipples (size 0) because I have a slow flow.

    @escheffler

we tried the mimijumi bottles but did not care for them -an expensive mistake.
  • Dr. Brown's bottles are the only one my son will drink from! Every other bottle caused him to throw up like crazy, I assume from the air getting in and causing bubbles and gas or something. Who knows. But the Dr. Browns have a piece inside the bottle to prevent that type of thing. And they have different ones with cute colors and designs and what not.
  • We started with Tommie tippee  DS hated them after awhile and refused them. We now use munchkin latch. He had no issues at all and still breastfeeds.
  • My LO only takes MAM bottles, I think it's the textured nipple. We also went through about six bottles before that one. Before I went back to work we tried and tried to get her to take bottles, all the tips above,  and she just wouldn't take them. She only got the hang of it once I actually went back to work and it was her only choice. It was stressful and scary for the first few days because she was so stubborn, but now she usually takes the bottle immediately,  even though she still prefers the boon of she has a choice!
