Teething pain? LO awake all night

I know it's been on here probably a million times......

but, LO is not sleeping ever! This mama is so tired and DH even helps out a ton at night but this is not easy! He naps great during the day and goes down easy at night. We follow the same routine for bedtime and lay him down drowsy but awake. He usually sleeps for 3 hours right when we lay him down at night but then after that he is up at least 10 times, every night.

Last night was the worse night ever, every 30 min all night. Wtf. I said to DH maybe we should give him Tylenol? Idk if it's teething pain or what. I feel like he has good sleeps "habits" but idk what is wrong. When he wakes up we just put his paci back in and roll him to his side and he falls back asleep usually! any advice is appreciated, thanks ladies!

Re: Teething pain? LO awake all night

  • I would try tylenol to see if it helps a lot but it sounds like he needs to learn how to put himself back to sleep. I'm currently sleep training my LO who used to co sleep with me in bed. He started waking hourly and that's just not sustainable for me long term so I do the same bedtime routine and put him in the crib.

I'm not a CIO supporter but what has helped him the most is letting him fuss it out for 5 minutes before going in to comfort him. I always thought that he would become hysterical but he doesn't, he cries a little and grumbles but he's not screaming or inconsolable. It's night three and he's still waking every few hours but he's already started putting himself back to sleep in under 5 min.

Hearing him out himself back to sleep on the monitor is like magic. If your LO just wants his pacific and a butt pat it may be time for him to learn to self sooth

  • How do I even start though? He sleeps in our room with us, it's a long story and there's no where else for him to sleep.. My husband seems to think that if he jumps out of bed every time he hears him whimper and comfort him, that he won't wake up all the way and fall back asleep easily. That may be true, but it's also teaching him that we will always be there to help him fall back asleep! It's hard because he is right there in our room so if he wakes up, we are all up :(
  • I started by moving my DS to his own room but you don't have to. You do have to be willing to let him fuss and try to sooth himself even if you're right there. I used to do the same thing and my son learned that I would help him get back to sleep every time so why learn to do it himself?

Start letting him fuss for 5 min, watch the clock and then help comfort him. My LO can already put himself back to sleep sometimes and is sleeping longer stretches and is much easier to get to sleep for bed and naps. It's a game changer. Obviously I go in sooner if he screams but that's only happened once when he couldn't burp himself.

I let him go 10 min if his fussing is getting softer and easier. Just remind yourself that you're not being mean to your LO, you're right there and you're teaching them an important skill of getting back to sleep.

Your DH has to stop being so eager and let LO work it out some on his own (very sweet DH though brownie points! :))
  • Okay we will try tonight! Thank you so much for the advice!!
  • Wow, you have literally just described my night for the last five nights! Except mine doesn't take a paci and just ends up in bed with me in order for him to stay asleep longer than 20 minutes. Unfortunately my husband can't take it and so LO and I sleep in a different room. Planning on doing real sleep training when we finally get his crib (he's been in a pnp since birth) later this week because this is not sustainable as you said. Letting them fuss is super hard, but they won't be damaged by it and you are right there if it gets too bad. I'm ready for the suck but hopefully it will be worth it when they are sleeping better!
  • @kylaelizabeth92 you're welcome! My LO was used to sleeping next to my heat so I ended up putting a soft blanket down for him to sleep on because it feels warmer and he can get a handful of it how he holds my shirts lol
