How Popular is Katherine?

Wondering how popular Katherine is? I know 2 who are adults but don't know any little girls named Katherine. Is Katherine popular in your area? I'd really like to use this name, but not sure if it is too popular. The other thing holding me back is the spelling. I know there are several ways to spell it, and I don't want my daughter to have to say no no I spell it this way...Do you think spelling is an issue with this name? Thanks!

There is 1 little girl in my son's preschool class of 11 kids with this name. My niece is 17 and it's her name, it's also my middle name. Its a classic and is timeless so I think its popularity will continue to hold pretty steady.

  • I do not know any young Katherine's- I know 2 in their 20's. I prefer the Catherine spelling... Just personal preference- any name that can be spelt with either a C or a K, I like the look of the C better.

  • Don't know any little Katherine's. I know a ton of Katelynn/Caitlyn/Kailynn's tho.

  • I knew about 3 in college. I can't think of any kids I know named Katherine. We are considering it also, but calling her Kate. I prefer that spelling because of that, but also like Kathryn.

  • My sister's name is Catherine (Cathy), she is almost 38.  She was named after our Aunt Cathy.  I don't know a Catherine that is a child.  I think it is a classic, lovely name.
  • Thanks for all the feedback! I am really loving Katherine with the nn Kate.  The next thing will be trying to figure out a middle name. We want to use a family name, but the only "good" names on my side are Elizabeth and Eleanor.  I love Elizabeth with Katherine, but that makes a really long name, and so many people I know have Elizabeth as a middle name... The only  name I like on my husbands side is May, but my SIL used that middle name for her daughter. And they actually use her middle name regularly. They call her Kaylee May.
  • What about:

    Katherine Rose
    Katherine Anne
    Katherine Elaine
    Katherine Eve
    Katherine June
    Katherine Jane
    Katherine Elise
    Katherine Isla

  • It's classic and traditional but not popular currently.
  • It's our #1 girls name and I think it's traditional but not currently popular. Lovely choice, if I do say so myself!  ;)
  • I wouldn't worry about popularity with this name - it will always be timeless, classic and elegant even if it becomes common again. Katherine is a standard spelling.  Katherine Eleanor or Katherine Elizabeth are both beautiful. If you're worried about length what about Katherine Beth or Katherine Eliza?

I am Kathryn. And it was always a struggle growing to be called Kathryn. To this day people try to shorten my name.

Did I introduce myself as Kathy? No. Then don't call me Kathy.

  • I am a Katherine and was called Kate growing up. I don't actually know that many Katherine's. It was number 83 in 2014 (only about 3,600 births). I agree that it is a classic timeless name - but I'm biased.

A great name, but because a few spellings are widely accepted she will have to clarify when her name needs to be spelled. Not a big deal to me though.
  • Another Kathryn (although I go by Katie). As for spelling- sometimes people guess right, sometimes wrong, sometimes it gets butchered. Anyone else had Katheren? Lol. In the grand scope, spelling my name out once in a while is no big deal.
