Meal Shakes

Just trying to get some ideas.....does anyone make "meal" shakes throughout the day? I've made them in the past using just fruit, veggies, yogurt, milk and ice. I'm most curious about some of the protein powders out there. My boss is SUPER into shakes and makes a choc, apple, peanut butter one almost daily. Are they safe? A good suggestion? I'm obviously not looking to use them for weight loss, but I figure there's got to be a healthy way to incorporate them into my diet to get in more fruits and veggies!! I'm thinking of having one after breakfast, but before lunch.

*We have a Vitamix at work, so I can use any ingredients mentioned!

Re: Meal Shakes

  • My doctor told me protein power/protein shakes (shakes made with the powder) were fine.  I brought it up when I mentioned trying to find ways to get more protein in my diet.

I sometimes have a shake for breakfast, but that's the only meal I replace with them.  Other than that its more of a snack/dessert option.

  • @megstervt Ok, good to hear!! What do you add to your shakes?
  • Pretty much any fruit or veg you want. I like to use almond or rice milk as a liquid base, buy whatever fruit/veg is on sale and throw it in. With or without a scoop of protein powder.

  • I make one specific shake every day for breakfast and it's super yummy! I've tweaked it over the past few weeks and this has been my favorite combination:

    - 1 handful baby spinach
    - 1 cup frozen pineapple
    - 1 fresh banana
    - 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
    - 1 tablespoon peanut butter
    - 1 cup almond milk

You won't taste the spinach at all - It's super yummy and fills me up for most of the morning.

  • I also asked my doctor about protein powders. She said they were fine as long as they didn't have any of the extra supplements like fat burners/appetite suppressants etc. I like to do chocolate protein powder with dark chocolate almond milk and a banana.

I usually do protein powder (vanilla), oats (just makes it a little thicker), frozen fruit (my favorite right now is peaches), ice or milk, and a dash or two of cinnamon.  For some reason I can't get in to vegetables even though I know you can't really taste it, it's a mental thing for me

ETA: I also add a fresh banana.  Forgot that originally

  • I have a smoothie for breakfast with spinach, blackberries, chocolate protein powder, and almond milk.
  • Ok, love the inspiration!! I'm going to pick up my assortment of items to keep at work. I think the warmer the weather gets, the better these will be! :)
  • I've been making smoothies for almost 5 years for breakfast most days of the week. On the weekends I go for smoothie bowls or acai bowls, because like @noelietrex said they're fun to decorate and eat! :)

    My everyday go-to ingredients are:
    - one frozen banana
    - one cup coconut water or unsweetened almond milk
    - two handfuls spinach
    - one scoop of Garden of Life vegan vanilla protein powder
    - one teaspoon each of chia seeds, flax seeds & hemp hearts

From there, I add one frozen fruit like mango, blueberries, pineapple depending on my mood. I've also done canned pumpkin with cinnamon which is a nice fall treat!
  • I didn't even think about shakes as a way to gain more protein!  Such a great idea.  Thanks for all the awesome recipes :)

  • I love smoothies! I make mine with a cup of apple juice (helps with pregnancy constipation..), various frozen fruit, spinach, and a teaspoon-ish of spirulina. Sometimes I throw in some fresh ginger also

  • This smoothie is a bit different from the fruit/veggie route, but if you're looking for protein its fantastic. It tastes super decadent, like dessert(!), and keeps me full for hours.

    • 1/2 cup oatmeal
    • 1 Tbsp chia seeds
    • 2 Tbsp nut butter
    • 2 Tbsp cocoa powder
    • 1 cup milk (whatever kind you have)
    • 1 Tbsp maple syrup
    • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract (optional)
    • 1 frozen banana  (if it's not frozen, add in a couple handfuls of ice)
  • Like PPs said, protein powder is good as long as there's no extra chemical additives.  DH has done a lot of research on what the best type of protein powder is just for his own body building... and now I'm using that same protein powder for baby building!  I use cold filtered whey protein isolate from truenutrition.com.  It's extremely pure, high in protein, and free of additives.  I buy the unflavored/unsweetened and it seriously tastes delicious - either in a smoothie or alone mixed with water and a tiny spoon of sugar as a protein shake.  1 scoop has 27g of protein and only 113 calories.  Which is pretty much the highest concentration of pure protein I've seen without extra additives and calories.

    lurking from August..

Just curious @Lindsayleigh1989Your doctor said to go ahead with shakeology?? Every doctor I've talked to and everything I have read says not to use it during pregnancy Because some of the ingredients can cause miscarriage. I do Beachbody programs and definitely don't use shakeology now. I use a product called Vega One- All in One Nutritinal Shake, completely plant based and no harmful ingredients according to my OB and 20 g of protein. It's similar to @jlmartinez517 Garden of Life.

  • I am also curious about the shakeology. My doctor said it was a no because it had a lot of herbal unknowns in it at a higher concentration. I'm a food scientist and can reconginze most of the ingredients but have no medical training to say if it's bad or not for a baby. I'd love other opinions on this though!
  • @tmk0325 yup my dr cleared it the only ingredient you need to be cautious about is the vitamin a so because it has 100% of it in there my dr just took me off my prenatal and I just use the shakeology as my prenatal as I'm out of the woods as far as needing folic acid which was the only missin ingredient. Also every dr has their own opinion but mine cleared it and I know several ladies who also have never had any issues with it.

  • @tmk0325 Good to hear about the Vega One. I found that at Costco, which makes purchasing super easy. I think I'll give that a try, along with a handful of the other ingredients ladies mentioned. Can't wait to get going on these!!
  • I gave my midwife the list of ingredients for shakeology since she is far more knowledgable about herbs than the OB I was seeing and she said nothing in them concerns her.
  • I do a smoothie every morning that is

    - kale
    - lemon juice
    - ginger
    - banana
    - apple juice
    - filtered water
    - spirulina
    - flax seed oil
    - hemp or brown rice protein powder

  • One more thing about Shakeo do not have it more then once a day due to level of vitamin a in it and also don't combine it with a prenatal for the same reason this was why I just waited to use it again until second tri and always talk to your dr and trust them.

  • @Nerdchild we must use the same recipe.  That milkshake is what caused me to end up here in this board

  • I asked about my protein powder with vitamins and my OB said it was fine but I would have to be careful for weight gain.
  • Interesting, @Y0urm0m!! I'll keep that in mind. I highly doubt I'll have the motivation to make these daily, but I'm hoping for at least a few days a week.
  • So my brain was at its finest and when I saw meal shakes I immediately thought shaking with hunger.  I get awfully hungry but not that hungry.

Otherwise I'm a huge fan of smoothies for dessert, like peanut butter, yogurt, almond milk, banana and cocoa powder.
  • Does carnation instant breakfast count because I'm obsessed.
  • @Weville AHAHAHA!!! I just laughed out loud....mainly because I know what you mean about getting real hungry. Sometimes I feel like if I pushed it another 5 minutes, I might have started to shake. I seriously eat All. Day!
