Newbie... New to the bump and IVF

Hello Everyone,

I guess I will start with a little history. TTC  almost 2 years. Me 24 salpingectomy for hydro in right tube no other issues at the time. DH 28 prefect.

So far I have done 4 IUI's all failed one prior to surgery total of 3 cycles on letrozole, 1 Clomid, 1 letrozole with Gonal-f and one full Gonal-F cycle, only able to do IUI when I had follicles on the "good" side. We are now on a break (my choice) from treatment until April when we will start IVF, probably late April with an early May ER. I'm pretty nervous for IVF only for the stims, as I was sore for two weeks after Gonal-f and only had two mature follicles.

Please let me know if anyone has any questions, or any advise for IVF. Hope to get to know you all and help or contribute as much as I can.

Re: Newbie... New to the bump and IVF

  • Hi @dest19 and welcome.
Sorry we have to meet on this board, but you'll soon feel right at home.

I did one round of IVF with gonal-f and it didn't feel to well afterwards, had about 20 follicles, and 17 where mature egg they retrieved. But it wasn't anything I wouldn't do again.
I do recommend to take it easy when follicles start to grow.

Definitely keep us posted about your journey and lots of GL

  • @tvh1982 thank you so much for your reply. And the welcome.
Its good to hear the gonal-f worked well for you. I am assuming that I will be on that as well for my IVF cycle. 17 Mature that's a great number. Can I ask if you had success with your IVF cycle or if you did a FET. My RE has high hopes of a fresh sticking but I've read so much that FET have a higher.
Thank you for the recommendation to take it easy.... I hope to be able to, but I will still be working full time during IVF :-( lol

  • Hei!
I've had one fresh cycle with no success. At the time I was slightly overstimulated, but I hadn't heard of that before. So I waited with my embryos til day 5. I had 8 nice ones left and one was ready to burst. So that one got placed back.
Unfortunately had the little snowflake no chance at all as my body didn't feel well due to the over-stimulation. Had I know about that I would have postponed placing back my embryo. Would be disappointed if they told me to wait, but I think with what I know now I didn't have a change.
    That was in November.

In January I had my first FET. Which I found much easier for my body. And I don't take any injections, my progesterone are suppositories (messy, but no needle!) that I am more relaxed.
Unfortunately the clinic booked me on Tuesday and wrote to me in an email I had an appointment on Monday. So they weren't as prepared as they should have been and due to getting IVF in a different country and being on the correct day in my cycles they had to thaw the embryo and place it back. (I am single and living in Norway, due to the law I am not allowed to get pregnant with a donor, but Denmark does, so I travel there to get my treatments)
    Again a BFN

I am now currently in my 2WW (or actually 16 days! pure torture) of my second FET. This time the clinic was prepared, they had thawed one embryo, but it wasn't developing too well, so they decided to take a second one. The second one did well, so that one got placed back, while the first one had given up before placing back.
So now I hope due to my body being much more calm (no over-stimulation) and the clinic being ready (no wrong bookings) that this little snowflake will grow into my lovely baby

I did work during my IVF too, but I did a boksing session, and train poledancing (as a work out)..which I now know I shouldn't have done, due to the risk of damaging your ovaries.
I had 3 days off after ET, but did sightseeing with my mum through Copenhagen as she never had been.
Which I probably shouldn't have done either.
Bed, Netflix and a glass of wine would have been better (yes wine, those eggs are out, last change to have a glass!)
Now in my 2WW I take it easy. No heavy training, just strolling around town/mountains here in lovely Bergen, Norway. Relax at work..I try not to stress. And some days in my weekend I decide that I am perfectly happy with sofa, Netflix, a good book, ... and do absolutely nothing

  • Welcome @Dest19!  We may be on similar cycles because my husband and I recently decided to move on to IVF after our 2nd failed IUI.  We opted to not do anymore IUIs because of male factor infertility (low motility) and our RE's recommendation since we only have a 10% or less chance of success with IUI.  For both my IUI cycles I did strictly follistim injections (which I believe is just the name brand of gonal f, so the same thing).  I do believe they up your dose of the injectables when you're stimming for IVF though so that you produce more follicles, so hopefully that will help you get a better response.  I will say though, I had a good response to follistim and developed a lot of follicles, but didn't have any discomfort or pain or anything, so maybe every cycle is different.  You might feel fine even with a higher dose!

  • @tvh1982 FX crossed for you during your TWW. When is your beta? so sorry it has been a rough go with appointments and such for the first FET. I hope this on sticks! Thank you so much for all of the information, I will try my best to take it as easy as possible for my IVF cycle. Keep me posted on your beta please! No worries on the essay, I very much enjoyed reading your story and experience with IVF! :-)

@wifeinraleigh28 it would be great to be cycle buddies if the timing works out. both on our first IVF cycle after IUI. That is great you responded well, gives you a good idea of what IVF may bring. I was on a super low dose only 75iu a day for 11 days and ended up with TWO 19mm follicles I was very happy with two, first time with two.  We opted to do a few more IUI's as they hoped my left tube was not effected, for the two HSG's it appeared open, now starting to think it may have some issues despite appearing open. With MFI will you being doing ICSI? We have decided if we will be or not the extra little nudge may bring me some comfort though.

  • @Dest19 - Two follies is good!!  I was on 125 iu of follistim CD 3-8 on both my IUI cycles and was ready to trigger by CD 9 because the follies grew so quickly.  My dr was worried that if he waited longer to trigger me I would end up with way too many mature ones!  I'm sure you'll get a bunch more follies when they increase your dose for IVF!  Yes, we will definitely be doing ICSI.  I really don't want to go through IVF without giving ourselves the best chance possible, and I know that ICSI will greatly increase our fertilization chances.  I also want to do the chromosomal testing too, also to give ourselves a better chance.  I know all of this adds cost pretty significantly but in the end I just don't think it will be worth spending any money at all on this if we don't have the best chances possible, you know?  I will have a better idea of our timeline once we meet with the RE on 3/15 to discuss moving to IVF.  It will probably be a similar schedule as yours!

  • @wifeinraleigh28 I know the CD 9 trigger that's how I was on letrozole. When they added a cd 7 gonal-f shot I O'd on CD 8 before my scan but on the tubeless side so not a big deal. I'm hoping I respond good to the increased dosage.... Will only know when I get there. Good luck with your consult.. Please let me know how it goes and what your plan looks like. I am on CD 4 today of a 26-27 day cycle. My next cycle I will start the official planning/financial and should start stims around 4/22. I thankful already have my breakdown of cost, I was able to get that after my last IUI when I said I was ready to move to IVF. I completely understand if your already paying thousands of dollars, getting the best of a chance is worth the little extra. We too will be doing ICSI, but I don't think we will do the PGD on the embryos, we did the genetic testing and everything came back normal. So at the moment we're going to skip.. I hope the next two weeks go quick so you can have your plan!!

@dragonfaerie thank you so much for the warm welcome :-) I'm so glad I finally joined... After months of reading lol. Yes the break was well needed, but surprisingly a very hard choice to make.

@ultratomato FX for both of us during the wait! And thank you for the welcome! Keep me updated please on your IVF start date, maybe we will be able to be cycle buddies.
