Johnson & Johnson

I've loved their Lavendar Baby Wash and Lotion but now I'm worried since the lawsuit has hit news.  I read a Time magazine article that basically said Johnson & Johnson has ignored recommendation to use safer products and it isn't safe.  What do you all think?  Is it legit?  Should we stop using J&J on our babies?

Re: Johnson & Johnson

  • I don't use their products. They contain a lot of things on the no-good list.

  • I don't use it either. I have a bottle that Ive had since my first and she's almost 5! I use it here and there on my hands. They smell great but my 5yo didn't react well to it when she was a baby so we switched to Aveeno. If you like the lavender of J&J, they have a lightly scented lavender one and they also have a calming soap that smells amazing.
  • We don't use it either. I was gifted a bunch when DS was born and it was the only thing that gave him a rash. Then I found out about how bad it is for babies. We use the Live Clean baby products. They were nice for DS and I continued to use them with this LO. They smell amazing!

Most of what was questionable was removed a few years ago. They use it in the hospitals and if it was really so bad I don't think they'd be allowed to sell it anymore! We use it and my son loves and we have no issues with it and he has pretty sensitive skin!

ETA: My sister's dermatologist recommended it for her eczema as well.
  • No J&J here, partly because DS1 had dry skin issues and his skin couldn't tolerate anything that had alcohol in it but also because there product is so ...harmful.

I now use a our unrefined shea butter, grapeseed oil and essential oil blend on the kiddos, and don't get me wrong, I'm not super crunchy or anything. This is just a blend I found that I can get ingredients cheapily, easily and it repairs DS1 skin issues.
  • I returned all j and j products and only use Aveeno or babyganics soap. My LO has beautiful skin and I have never had to use any lotions or creams on him.
  • This is what Johnson & Johnson did to my son. Dried out his skin so bad to the point I thought it was eczema. Gave him cradle cap too. I switched to aveeno and his skin was back to normal in 48 hours
  • We love how the J & J lavender night time smells but LO got a rash from it...quickly switched to aveno and zero issues now. I have very sensitive skin. I can't even use over the counter, no Neutrogena anything, even  Cetaphil messes up my skin. It's a giant pain in the butt. The correct skin care has made a world of difference!!!
  • I don't like the ingredients they use. Even with DD1 3 years ago I returned or donated all J&J products I was given. I use castile soap on the girls and for hand soap. We mostly stick to locally made bath products/creams so we know what goes in, how it was sourced, etc.

    1. Aveeno is a manufacturer of skin care and hair care products in the United States and is a subsidiary of American consumer goods and pharmaceutical company Johnson & Johnson. Aveenowas founded in 1945, and its first product was their Soothing Bath Treatment.

Just FYI aveeno is made by J & J
I think that's not really the point here. If one causes a rash and the other doesn't, but they are just owned by the same company, that doesn't really matter. Does it? That doesn't mean they are made of the exact same ingredients and chemicals.
  • We use Aveno for lo. I was using Burt's Bees, but it made her cradle cap worse. The problem with the U.S. is that in order for a chemical or other ingredient to be banned for use, it has to be proven very harmful. In Europe it's the opposite. There ingredients must be proven safe before they can be put in products which is why so much stuff that is in our food, ect is banned over there.
  • We use Shea Moisture and LOVE it. Never had a problem with her skin while using it. Babyganics dried her out. Haven't used J&J since LO came home from the NICU.
  • Yes they do.
  • This is what scares me!!
  • Not aggressive!  I appreciate the detailed response!  I do not have a scientific mind and when I read detailed factual articles it overwhelms me!!!  My husband is a environmental manager and he just rolls his eyes at me when I worry about this stuff.  He knows a lot about chemicals as well and told me a lot of what you said but I still wanted to know other Mom's perspectives!  Thanks :)

We've used all Johnson and Johnson stuff and his skin has been ok. He did start to get dry the last month but it's hotter here now- so I'm using the advanced moisture one now.

edited to add: I love their stuff. I have to be the one odd ball again and say the baby aveeno gave him a rash- weirdest thing bc everyone else does great with aveeno....
  • We used California baby on our 3 year then we switched to the Shea Moisture line. We love it. And for lotion we just use coconut oil. I stopped using Johnson and Johnson products on babies years ago and started looking for things more natural. I still have bottles of it from 10 years ago when my oldest was a baby that I just need to go ahead and throw away since we won't be using it.
  • We don't use it either, we use Aveeno and The Honest Company. The only time we used Johnson and Johnson was when LO was in the NICU and the nurses at hospital used it for his sponge baths.Sucks that companies use different chemicals to make products.  :/
  • The recent issue is a lot of their baby products contain parabens (including the lavender bath wash and lotion) and parabens have been linked to causing various forms of cancer. Here is a good article through the FDA on the facts:

    https://www.fda.gov/Cosmetics/ProductsIngredients/Ingredients/ucm128042.htm#Are_there_health_risks
  • Thanks for the link!  I'm going to stop but need to find a good replacement.

We don't use it; we prefer to use more natural products, and J&J is supposed to be one of the more problematic products, even amongst its conventional group. We use The Honest Company shampoo, although there are plenty of other good alternatives (Burt's Bees, etc.).
  • As mentioned earlier, the  recent Johnson & Johnson lawsuit related specifically to the use of talc in their baby powder formulation, and its theorized correlation to an adult's development of ovarian cancer after years of using talk externally and internally on her genitals.  The lawsuit, FWIW, doesn't allege that there is causation...its focus is on the company putting labels on its products that note potential risk. It doesn't say, "TALC CAUSES CANCER."

Here is information on the correlation between talc used on genitals and cancer cell development, with some peer-reviewed studies linked:

    https://www.the-scientist.com/?articles.view/articleNo/45493/title/Can-Talc-Cause-Cancer-/

I have baby powder that I got in a basket at a shower that is 100% cornstarch, no talc involved. Johnson & Johnson makes it.  I'm sure other companies do, as well, and you can always use plain, cooking grade cornstarch, too...I certainly had parents provide that when I worked in a daycare.

At any rate, as someone mentioned above, the lawsuit relates specifically to talc.  Not the company's other products or their ingredients.  I use Johnson & Johnson's baby shampoo on  my kid's scalp...sometimes...sometimes I use Aveeno - as others have noted, same manufacturer, sometimes Honest Co. samples.  For lotion and dry skin balm, I ordinarily use Aveeno Baby, Burt's Bee's Baby, and Shea Moisture, though I have Johnson & Johnson baby lotion.  My favorite is the Aveeno Baby (though Burt's Bee's is what cleared up cradle cap for us).
  • J&J products sold in the US do still have cancer causing ingredients, funny thing is if you buy the ones distributed in Europe it does not.
  • I'm with @TabulaRasa25 on this one.  Chemical does not equal bad and natural does not always equal good.  There are several chemicals added to your drinking water.  They may sound scary and have unrecognizable names but those chemicals are the reason that people in the developed world don't get cholera and dysentery any more.

J&J does not have cancer causing ingredients, which is a vague statement.  What are these ingredients? Parabens have no scientifically proven link and have been shown to have less estrogenic activity than naturally occurring estrogen (via @backatac FDA link).  Talc is not in baby shampoos, its also not specific to J&J and formaldehyde was removed despite being completely safe in the levels at which it was present.

I don't even use J&J usually, I tend to use Aveeno because I happen to prefer it but it certainly isn't because I think its dangerous.  It's not.
  • J&J used to contain formaldehyde about 6 years ago.  Not only do their products smell artificial to me but the toxicity of their ingredients was a big turnoff.  I only use organic products on my children and myself so I'm much happier using clean label brands like Burt's Bees.  I also stay far away from phtalates, sodium lauryl sulfate and parabens.

  • I use J&J! I love it. I was lucky enough to have two kids who don't react to any fabrics, soaps, or laundry detergents. My sister wasn't so lucky, and her kids needed special products for their extremely sensitive skin. Every baby and family is different, and we use whatever we have found is the best fit for our kids.

On a side note, the lawsuit originally mentioned, involving talc - several have already commented on it, so I will just add that my pediatrician and my hospital have always warned against using any powder on baby at all, due to the risk of the infant inhaling the dust and it causing respiratory problems.
