Recovery "down there"

DD1 was a c/s, so all this crotch recovery is new to me. I had a first degree tear, which was sutured, and have some lacerations up near my urethra that they didnt suture (inner labia area). I'm 4 days PP now, and yesterday I started to get some really bad burning/stinging in one spot that hurts every time I sit down. I'm wondering if maybe I pulled a stitch? I tried looking (yikes), but everything is still so swollen it's hard to tell what's going on.

Anyone have a similar experience? How long did it take you to feel better?

It doesn't help that I've laid down for a total of 1hr since she was born. Other than that, I've been sleeping sitting up in the rocker with her.

Re: Recovery "down there"

  • Dermoplast spray works great on burning/pain. Or sitting on an ice pack. If you have a boppy or nursing pillow try sitting on that. It takes pressure off that area. Good luck! It's not fun but thankfully it usually heals fairly quickly
  • Loading the player...
  • Sitting in general makes my lady parts sting or burn and it sounds like we have the same injuries. Laying down, dermaplast, witch hazel pads and Motrin are what help me. Also, replacing your pad super often so there is nothing wet touching the wounds.

  • All of what PP's recommend. The ice pads may work well to numb the area for a bit when you're sitting. I'm not sure if those are indications that you pulled a stitch or not, could you put a call into the office to see what they say?
  • I had that with both my babies. I thought I pulled a stitch too and made DH look.
I agree with the above. Even though DD was 1st degree and DD was 2nd degree tears I feel like with DD is was more painful longer. I used like 2 cans of dermaplast.
  • I had been using the dermoplast early on, stopped for a little bit, then last night it burned when I used it! I'm glad to see that the stinging might be normal. All these terrible scenarios were running through my head last night.

The lacerations are awful, because my MW said I need to be spreading them (inner labia) apart several times a day so the open cuts on either side don't stick together and heal stuck together.  :#

  • Ouch! The peri-bottle was my best friend (although I didn't have stitches- just a tear, not sure if that makes a difference?).  I felt like the swelling didn't go down for a whole month and my whole "area" was like a foreign country ... Wasn't sure what was going on down there for a while! I'm only 2weeks PP this time around but it's a similar situation.  I have more swelling and I think hemmroids this time around.
  • I totally underestimated the pain id feel down there after. I had a 2nd degree tear with stitches and sometimes it will all just throb and sting. It's unbearable. After labor i remember them asking if I wanted pain killers and I said oh noo I'm feeling okay.... And then the epidural wore completely off... OUCH
  • The long lasting pain down below was probably my biggest surprise of giving birth when I had my first. And how quickly I forgot what I went through after my first was delivered and now re experiencing it.  I did need to get restitched two weeks pp. (the very same day we had to drive three hours out of state to my brothers wedding that night...awful). So it is quite possible you might need to be restitched. You can call dr and ask what they think. But in my experience, you will hurt for at the least a week before it starts to feel any better. Burning down there is fairly normal. I'm experiencing the same. You are so raw and cut up and maybe even have some possible hemmorids.  I suggest making some padsicles and using any numbing spray/cream you can get your hands on. It Should get better soon. Fx! Good luck and feel better!
  • Ow. :(

In a similar situation here, too. Ended up with some major tears. Just gave birth yesterday, so no expert advice aside from cold things in your undies. It's all pretty tender.

    Here's to healing!
  • I have the same "injuries". Lol. Sitting sucks and makes it hurt down there, but I've been doing a lot of sitting too. I'm forgetful and have just been doing motrine occasionally. Hoping one day it feels normal again!!
  • @VitaLuna This is hysterical! I was just telling my husband this the other day. Send in 38 week pregnant women and women who are a week out from their delivery. No 16 year old would EVER get pregnant before they are ready. Hell... I was telling my 30 yo friend and she's seriously considering babies after our talk.

I watched my mom deliver my sister when I was 8. And then dealt with this baby, and then toddler, etc. By the time I hit high school, it was STILL the best birth control out there, lol! Had I known more about post partum issues it would have been foolproof!

  • Witch hazel pads were so amazing. For the whole first week I would cry when I drank water bc I knew it would make me have to pee, ow!
  • I had the same feeling for about a week @VitaLuna. Then when the stitches started to heal up, the pain came back during the dissolution of the stitch. New Momma Bottom Balm was awesome to use one I got sick of the witch hazel pads that dried up too quickly.

@VitaLuna you took the words right out of my mouth! Am balancing uncomfortably on rings of towels trying to feed my DD who is apparently entirely nocturnal and avoiding putting any pressure on my 3rd degree tear! Surely a turn off for unprotected sex lol!
  • @mommaz1 I had no idea that pain of the stitches healing was a thing!!! When does this usually happen? I'm 8 days PP and it feels sooooo painful down there. i didn't know if I had done something to irritate them or what
  • I had a first degree, DD was almost 9 pounds, and I seriously did not have swelling or significant pain that I can remember.  Perhaps I was in a hell of a lot more pain from my hysterectomy, but I really have no recollection other than the itching from healing!

  • 2nd degree tear, still hurts two weeks in. Not just the stitches, the whole vaginal area. Also still bleeding. A lot less, but still bleeding. Taking Motrin and Tylenol. My husband tried to replace my used up can of Dermoplast but got some other brand that had an antiseptic in it as well, and OMG OUCH!! Not sure what is worse, the crotch pain or the nipple pain!
  • I can only echo what previous posters have said - I had a small tear (I wasn't told what degree it was) very close to the anal area, so for the first few days after delivery I was terrified to attempt #2! Dermoplast and the peri bottle were very helpful for me.
  • Just as the pain has started to go away, the itching has begun! And I've been having severe SPD pain that has gotten worse by the day to the point that I can't walk without holding onto something. Gah, crotches.. How can they be so useful and worthless all at the same time??

  • @VitaLuna The itching is almost worst than the pain!! It itches today and I didn't know what to do so I tapped it, it was worth a try ya know. Well, don't, under any circumstances, tap it!! Ouch!!
  • I had a 1st degree tear that was only going to need 2 stitches. When my OB went to stitch me, it hit a vessel. I started gushing blood down there. Well 20 stitches later... The doc felt horrible. But I knew it wasn't his fault. It's not like he could see it was there. But it has made recovery really shitty. I hurt so bad the first 2 weeks. This week has been better but if I push it doing chores or I'm out and about too long... hello Lortab!! But I've been pretty strict about taking my Motrin. I'm praying it's better by next Saturday because I have a wedding to go to. And I don't want to die from sitting.
  • @dragonfly321 for me, the pain came back at about 2-2.5 weeks post partum along with the itching. The new momma bottom balm helped with the itching too. It will definitely be part of my baby shower momma present from now on!
  • The itching. Sheewwwwww
  • @VitaLuna hopefully the itching has ceased. I only had the itching for about two days with my 1st degree tear. It gets better! I'm now in no pain 2.5 weeks out, and have felt that way for a few days now.
  • Anyone else still taking colace (or something similar)? I'm 4 weeks out and still dread anytime I have a BM. It's uncomfortable and sometimes still quite painful.
  • @chilady12 I've been doing prunes and magnesium supplement (which acts as a stool softener, too), but it's still really uncomfortable to go. It's not so much painful anymore as it is just weird swollen pressure and hard to go. Plus the hemorrhoids are fun. So glad babies are cute to offset the stuff we have to go through!

Mums who are further down the recovery route...how long did it take you to be able to sit without agony? Feeding is so challenging as have to be upright and it is so sore!!!

Miralax was a lifesaver for me. Apparently once things are stopped up down there colace can't help. I went from dreading the #2 to it being no problem at all in one day.

I had a small scrape near my vag. opening (no sutures). I spritzed sitz bath herbs with a peri bottle to prevent burning when peeing and I also applied a small amount of betadine on a cotton ball and coated the area after every bathroom use. DH also ran me a sitz bath herb & betadine bath to soak in. 9 days later and the scrape is almost healed and I have no discomfort. *Edited to add no sutures
