Food guidelines 6-9 months

LO is my 4th and my other three are much older so food recommendations have changed a lot since they were babies. We had his 6 month appointment today and after all the talk about BLW at 6 months I expected to be told that LO could have pretty much everything. He started solids at 4 months and has done really well even with thick purées, textures and some (soft) chunks. We have no allergies in our family. However his pediatrician said no meats/eggs until 9 months and to wait with most carbs until closer to then also, the exception being puffs and teething biscuits. She said fruits (no citrus), veggies and baby yogurt is fine. Has anyone else been told the same thing?

  • I was told no citrus or berries until after a year, but poultry is ok at 7 months. Also to wait on beans, peas, and bananas until at least 9 months because they can cause gas and constipation. I think every Dr has their own ideas of first foods.

  • Lurker from O15 but at our 4 month appointment our pedi told us we can start purées 3 weeks after cereal as long as he is doing well he said to do one a week and to do veggies and meats before fruits. It's crazy how different pedis recommend different things. wete doing veggies first and will decide after that what we're going to do
  • Interesting.....mine said start with meats, followed by veggies, and fruits last as they are sweet so they will naturally like them. Weird that there can be such a range depending on your dr.!

The huge range is based on how long drs have been in practice, and how much they follow current recommendations of their professional associations. I would follow the national recommendations. If you're in the US-AAP. AAP says you can feed meats right away. I would not go on the word of a pedi who recommends puffs (highly processed artificial food) over meat. And baby can eat any yogurt-they don't need baby yogurt.

Personally, our family Dr is foreign trained and doesn't know much about infants. When I'm worried I take her to the ER I work at and get an opinion from Drs I trust. I'm going with my own research and Health Canada guidelines; EBFing til 6mo then BLW.
