Probiotics

How many of you use probiotics for your LO and what is the reason you use them (as I've read they help with multiple issues)? How often during the day do you give it to your LO? DS has reflux pretty bad and has been on Zantac since 1mo but his pediatrician says since it should be getting better he no longer needs the medicine. I'm wondering if probiotics will benefit us! Thanks for any input/advice!

Re: Probiotics

  • When DD was about 6 weeks she started becoming extremely fussy. We thought that it was reflux because she showed the same signs that DS had when he had Silent Reflux. It all turned out negative. However, it got to the point where if she was awake she was fussing. She had to be held all the time. She wasn't content to be held and sit either. She wanted to be on the move so I was constantly holding her and walking her. I went through weeks of this before I came across probiotics. I bought the brand from Target called Mommy's bliss. (there's also the gerber soothe brand). It took about a week and she was a completely different baby. She's 5 months now and I still have her on them. They are expensive but seeing the difference makes it all worth it. Zantac can work but I do know it's weight based so as they grow the dosage has to be adjusted. Feel free to message me if you want to chat. I hope you get some relief soon! :)

  • @BrittanyM1015 what symptoms went away with the probiotics? My DS has reflux and we tried zantac but he screamed every time we gave it to him and I couldn't stand it. So I cut out all dairy from my diet instead and that really helped. He's much better now but still gets fussy and wants to be held a lot and gets hiccups frequently and occasional gas pain. I've been thinking about using the mommy's bliss probiotics for a while. I can't really see a downside. But I guess I'm just nervous to introduce something new.

Do you think you have to keep using them? How many times a day do you give them to your LO?
  • She would get hiccups a lot and had a really hard time burping which did lead to gas pains. Now she burps a lot easier and she will actually play on her mat or sit in her swing without screaming. I had tried cutting out dairy but it didn't do anything for her. She became a lot more content to play and is so much happier once the probiotics started working. I was nervous to start them too but your right there really isn't a downside. She gets one dropper a day. It may not fix the problem but it could definitely help
  • My DD was diagnosed with acid reflux at 5 weeks, been on Zantac ever since. All the docs say don't expect it to go away till 8/9 months. But she also has had every other GI issue in the book: gas, hard to burp, hiccups, diarrhea, etc. Probiotics helped all the lower GI issues. I used Mommy's Bliss plus a probiotic rice cereal from Target when the reflux got really bad, 1 tsp per 2 oz of breast milk in a bottle, simethicone gas drops up to 6 times a day and changing position so she's more upright when BFing helped too.
Hope your LO gets over this soon, if you have any specific questions just let me know
  • I was giving them daily but have backed off to just a few times per week.  LO had horrible gas and I could tell he was so uncomfortable which is why I started when he was about 2 months old.  His pediatrician also suspected reflux but medication did nothing for him.  Cutting dairy from my diet seemed to help the most with both gas and reflux issues.  He started having daily poops once I started the probiotic.  Prior to that he was only going every few days (this was after the constant newborn poop sessions had subsided).
So not sure I'm convinced it's made a huge difference but at the time I was so desperate to ease his discomfort that I gave them a try.  His doctor said they were safe.  I use Udo's choice brand.
Oh and with DS1 he was on reflux meds until well after his first bday.  All the typical things that usually help lessen reflux symptoms came and went (sitting, solids) and he still required almost monthly med dose adjustments until he was about a year.  We weaned fully at 15 months and he's done really well ever since.  His doctor said some kids just take longer to outgrow it than others. I did give him a probiotic as well.
  • Thank you all for sharing your experiences! DS has many similar qualities as some of your LOs. Definitely gassy, tons of spit up, only poops about every other day, frequent hiccups, hard to burp, and he just seems uncomfortable sometimes. We started the Mommy's Bliss probiotics (once a day) two days ago. Does anyone remember how long it took to notice a difference?
  • DS1 had the same issues, constant spit up, fussy, gassy, poor burper and would only poop maybe once a week.  We used the probiotic BioGaia and had really good results with it.  We gave it to him once a day first thing in the morning, we used them until he was about a year old.  We started noticing a difference after about a week.  If you don't have any luck with the Mommy's Bliss maybe give the BioGaia a try :) Good luck!
  • It was about a week to really notice a difference. Hope it works for you! :)
